Shedeur Sanders is no stranger to media attention. He’s grown up around it his whole life, with his father, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, and his NFL stardom. Shedeur received a lot of attention once he started playing collegiate football.
Now, as an NFL player with the Sanders name, Shedeur is under a media microscope, which he will likely be for his whole NFL career.
Media outlets have been hard on him, especially after his slide to a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft along with his recent speeding incidents. MMQB reporter and NFL Insider Albert Breer opened up about his own thoughts around the media’s treatment of Sanders.
Albert Breer Addresses the Shedeur Sanders Media Coverage
Breer defended how reporters are covering Sanders after Nick Wilson and Jonathan Peterlin, hosts of 92.3 FM The Fan’s “Afternoon Drive” radio show in Cleveland, suggested that the press might be too harsh on Sanders. Breer thinks Sanders is making choices, and the press is simply reacting to his behaviors.
“I think it’s sort of like, you made your bed, now you lie in it,” Breer said. “You know what I mean, this is sort of what Shedeur, for better or worse, attracted when he was in college.”
While attending the University of Colorado, Shedeur attracted a lot of attention. He was the face of the Buffaloes alongside Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. They played a big part in helping the program turn around its losing ways.
Shedeur always had a swagger and confidence, believing that he was better than the competition. Shedeur played with a little cockiness and seemed to want to prove himself when stepping onto the football field.
But that attention led to how the media is covering him these days. Shedeur’s style won him some fans. Doubters, though, also came along with the attention. Shedeur’s last name attracts even more attention, which puts him under pressure to be pretty much perfect.
Shedeur took a lot of heat for his pre-draft behaviors. With his draft-day slide, scrutiny followed. As Wilson and Peterlin point out, his last name doesn’t help him much and sometimes even hurts him. Shedeur always will be at the center of attention, making him susceptible to media criticism.
His speeding ticket incident led to plenty of backlash from the media. Wilson and Peterlin point out that it is just a speeding ticket in the grand scheme. The NFL world, though, took his speeding ticket a lot more seriously and even felt Shedeur was getting off easy.
Shedeur will make headlines one way or another. No matter what the media does, he will face scrutiny. Fans can argue whether the media is too hard or soft on him.
But his focus right now is on moving up the Browns’ quarterback depth chart.
