NFL Week 8 NFL Injury Report: Dak Prescott, Baker Mayfield, Austin Ekeler, and more

The latest injury updates for Dak Prescott, Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Austin Ekeler, Trey Lance, and many more ahead of NFL Week 8.

Welcome to Week 8 of the NFL season, the point of the year when a long list of injuries isn’t just likely — it’s inevitable. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (calf), Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield (shoulder), Browns running back Nick Chubb (calf), San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (knee), and Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler (hip) are just a few of the players we’re watching. Friday will be a critical day in determining their availability for this weekend’s games.

NFL Week 8 injury report starts with Dak Prescott

NFL odds swung 5 points away from the Cowboys late in the week, suggesting sharps believe that Prescott (calf) will not play against the Minnesota Vikings.

“Knowing this is a long journey and a long season, I don’t necessarily know if this is fully my decision, but I’m just going to keep controlling the things I can to get better,” Prescott said Thursday. “I’ve gotten better each and every day, and that’s what is most important. I’m just focused on doing that again tomorrow.”

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said Dak has to pass certain thresholds to play. Prescott on Thursday said he didn’t know what those thresholds were.

Prescott strained his calf on the game-winning touchdown pass in Week 6. The Cowboys had a bye in Week 7 and hoped the extra rest would prevent any missed time. But it was sore after Thursday practice, McCarthy told reporters, and suggested the Cowboys might give him another week off. If Prescott cannot play, Cooper Rush would start. Will Grier is also on the roster.

Dak Prescott game status: Questionable

QB Baker Mayfield and RB Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns

Mayfield (shoulder) will start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Friday.

Mayfield, who has a torn labrum and a fractured in his non-throwing shoulder, told reporters Wednesday that he benefitted from the team’s decision to hold him out of Week 7, saying there’s “a noticeable difference in range of motion and strength. Like I said, take it day by day, and see where we are.”

The Browns also expect to back have running back Nick Chubb, who missed the Broncos game with a calf injury.

Nick Chubb game status: Available

Antonio Brown, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The short-term outlook for Antonio Brown is not good, and the long-term isn’t exactly great either. Brown will miss his second straight game with an ankle injury Sunday, and Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians wouldn’t even commit to him playing in Week 10 when Tampa returns from its bye.

Antonio Brown game status: Out

Trey Lance, QB, San Francisco 49ers

Jimmy Garoppolo will start against the Bears, but should also have  Lance, who hasn’t appeared in a game since October 10 due to a sprained MCL. Lance was full-go in practice Friday after being limited Wednesday and Thursday.

Trey Lance game status: Available

Austin Ekeler, RB, Los Angeles Chargers

This one is a bit of a head-scratcher. Ekeler practiced fully Wednesday but then sat out the next two days with a hip injury. Ekeler has 598 yards and 7 touchdowns in six games for Los Angeles in 2021. He missed six games due to injury a year ago.

Austin Ekeler game status: Questionable

Julio Jones, WR, Tennessee Titans

The hamstring looks like it’s going to be a long-term issue for Julio Jones, who toughed it out and played 29 snaps against the Chiefs in Week 7 despite it bothering him. Jones sat out practice all week and will miss his third game of the season.

Julio Jones game status: Out

T.Y Hilton, WR, Indianapolis Colts

This is an important day for T.Y. Hilton, who suggested he needs to practice Thursday and Friday — and have his injured quad come through those practices all right — for him to play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Hilton worked on a limited basis Thursday and was back out there Friday.

T.Y. Hilton game status: Questionable

Von Miller, OLB, Denver Broncos

Von Miller said all the right things about playing Sunday against the Washington Football Team, but the fact that he was held out of practice all week with an ankle injury is concerning. Miller got hurt in Week 7 but seems determined to play.

Von Miller game status: Questionable

Jalen Ramsey, CB, Los Angeles Rams

We’re only including Jalen Ramsey because he didn’t practice Thursday and Friday with a non-COVID-19 illness. “I don’t anticipate that affecting his game status. He’s just still sick, want to make sure that he’s as fresh and healthy as possible,” Rams coach Sean McVay said.

Jalen Ramsey game status: Questionable
