‘What Are the Jets Doing?’ – NFL Fans Alarmed by Mike Williams Trade With Allen Lazard on IR

    Published on

The trade of Mike Williams from the New York Jets to the Pittsburgh Steelers left many NFL fans frustrated and confused.

On deadline day, the trade of Mike Williams to the Pittsburgh Steelers was the central point of discussion for New York Jets fans. They were in disbelief after the front office’s decision.

The Jets, floundering at the moment with a 3-6 record, have been struggling on offense. With key players like Allen Lazard now on injured reserve, New York’s faithful is questioning the logic behind this move.

Mike Williams Trade Is a Mix Candy for Jets Fans

Williams signed a one-year, $10 million contract in March after recovering from ACL surgery. However, the 30-year-old South Carolina native had a short-lived stint in New York. His arrival was marred by inconsistency and a lack of chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Williams was expected to be a reliable target. However, he spent much of training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which could be one reason that it disrupted any rapport building with Rodgers.

In nine games with New York, Williams managed just 12 receptions for 166 yards and zero touchdowns. Nevertheless, fans flocked to X to voice their frustration about the move.

“What are the Jets even doing 😂😦,” wrote one fan, summarizing the confusion among the fan base.

“Bro dropped a pass, and Aaron Rodgers had him exiled,” said another.

Another fan wrote: “Doesn’t make any sense the Jets could still use him this year.”

One fan said, “He leaves the dictator Rodgers, congratulations !”

Another said, “The Jets misused him from the start. Hopefully, [head coach Mike] Tomlin comes to his senses, starts [Justin] Fields, and lets him ball with a great receiver.”

One fan had mixed emotions over the Williams trade, saying, “Tough to see Williams gone but deserves the fresh start.”

“Good job @nyjets helping a team that might be in the wild card race in your conference. The Jets probably have no playoff hopes anyway, but if that was the attitude there, then they would’ve traded other pieces for more,” said another criticizing the Jets’ management.

New York’s decision to part with Williams is the latest in a string of disappointing free agent signings under general manager Joe Douglas. Williams’ departure has financial consequences, too.

Per Spotrac, the Jets are now on the hook for a $5.87 million dead cap hit in 2025 due to Williams’ contract.
