Drake Maye to Giants? Latest Draft Rumor Teases Trade Up for New York

After initial speculation suggested a receiver with the sixth overall pick, the New York Giants are apparently interested in trading up for Drake Maye.

Drake Maye is considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. For quarterback-needy teams, the North Carolina prospect could be the exact leader needed to turn their luck around.

While the New York Giants are already paying Daniel Jones top quarterback money, the lack of a long-term plan has kept Big Blue in the backseat to other teams in their division, like the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.

It appears New York is looking to make a big pre-draft shake-up that could certainly change the balance of power in the NFC East.

Giants Interested in Trading Up for Drake Maye

One of the continuously running draft rumors as of late centers around the G-Men looking for ways to trade up in the first round to select Maye with a top-five pick.

New York currently owns the sixth overall pick in the draft and has enough resources to potentially make a surprise move up the board.

ESPN’s Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan stated that the Giants were looking to trade up for Maye.

NFL reporter Pete Schrager later confirmed it on the Pat McAfee Show Tuesday afternoon.

The Giants own both the sixth and the 47th overall picks this year, as well as their first two picks next season.

Should New York come to an agreement with either the New England Patriots (No. 3 overall pick), Arizona Cardinals (No. 4), or Los Angeles Chargers (No. 5) in front of them, the Giants would have to part with a seemingly healthy amount of overall assets.

It’s been a roller coaster of an offseason in New York. The Giants lost standout players Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney to free agency, but they traded for pass-rushing dynamo Brian Burns and signed Jon Runyan and Jalen Mills to free agent deals.

With needs at wide receiver, offensive line, and in the secondary, the Giants could have been seen as a team looking for the best available non-quarterback of the draft. Now, it appears the organization is ready to start the clock when it comes to the head coach-general manager duo of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.

Drake Maye’s Scouting Report

In his player profile from Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings, Maye is seen as the top quarterback, ahead of the likes of USC’s Caleb Williams and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels of LSU.

“Maye is a measured, precise, and instinctive passer who can test defenses in the intermediate and deep ranges,” Cummings writes. “He’s better than Williams at maintaining pocket discipline, staying on rhythm, and taking what’s given in the short range, and he can carve defenses apart in the intermediate range with his anticipatory high-velocity javelins.”

The best comparison for Maye, according to Cummings, is none other than Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

In two seasons as a starting quarterback for the Tar Heels, Maye threw for over 8,000 yards with 63 touchdowns and completed close to 65% of his passes. Those numbers may pale in comparison to the likes of Williams and Daniels, but Maye put forth an excellent college career of his own.
