NFL Coaches Fired 2022: Latest analysis on NFL Black Monday firings

Which NFL head coaches have been fired on Black Monday today? Who else could be out of a job in the coming days?

With a lot of uncertainty heading into Black Monday around which NFL coaches might be fired, we have seen three coaches lose their job today. That now takes us to six NFL head coach vacancies heading into the evening of Black Monday, with the potential of maybe another couple to come. Let’s take a look at which NFL head coaches have been fired and who might be on the way out.

NFL head coaches fired

  • Matt Nagy, Chicago Bears
  • Brian Flores, Miami Dolphins
  • Mike Zimmer, Minnesota Vikings
  • Vic Fangio, Denver Broncos
  • Urban Meyer, Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Jon Gruden, Las Vegas Raiders

Latest NFL Black Monday news on coaches fired today

The action on Black Monday kicked off just after 9 PM ET with three head coaches fired today within the space of 30 minutes. First to go was Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. Many reports expected the Vikings to fire Zimmer after missing the playoffs in 2021. He is a well-respected defensive coach and should end up somewhere as a defensive coordinator this offseason.

Close behind Zimmer was another NFC North head coach in Matt Nagy. It was clear from the middle of the season that Nagy’s time in Chicago was running out. There were rumors during the season that the Bears might fire him midseason. However, the Bears have a proud tradition of never firing their head coach during the year, and they kept that intact. It will be fascinating to see where Nagy winds up this offseason.

The third NFL head coach to be fired today was a surprising decision. Brian Flores saw his time in Miami end after missing the playoffs for a third straight year. Flores’ team finished on a high with a victory over the Patriots and a 9-8 record. According to a report by PFN’s NFL Insider Adam Beasley, Flores was not the easiest coach to work with and had a strained relationship with several people in the organization. That seemingly forced the hand of Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

Those three head coaches mean the Dolphins, Bears, and Vikings join the Jaguars, Raiders, and Broncos in looking for a new franchise leader. Yet, even though Black Monday in the NFL will soon be over, there might be more coaches set to lose their jobs in the coming days.

Which other NFL HCs could lose their jobs after the 2021 season?

There are three names seemingly still in the frame to be fired. The first is Joe Judge of the New York Giants. Judge’s time in New York has been a disaster, and with the Giants set to hire a new GM, there is uncertainty over Judge’s future. If the new GM comes in and decides he wants a change in coach, Judge may be on his way out.

Another situation to watch is David Culley in Houston. While the Texans impressed down the stretch, the franchise is reviewing its football operations. Therefore, we could see Culley as the next NFL head coach fired after just one season. PFN’s NFL Insider and Chief Draft Analyst Tony Pauline recently reported that Josh McDaniels could replace Culley.

The final situation to watch is in Seattle with Pete Carroll. There is no certainty either way with Carroll, but there have been whispers that his time could be up. It was reported Sunday that Carroll would meet with the chairwoman of the team this week. That meeting is not unusual, but there does seem to be a possibility we see Carroll out of Seattle following that meeting.
