Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders has gotten plenty of attention for his success on the field. He has emerged as a top prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft, with analysts predicting he could go No. 1 overall — a feat achieved by quarterbacks in 20 of the last 27 drafts.
By now, Sanders is used to the spotlight because of his father, NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.
But while Shedeur seems destined for the NFL, questions about his father, a.k.a. Coach Prime, remain just as intriguing.
Shedeur Sanders Sees Coach Prime in Colorado Next Year
Coach Prime has revolutionized the Buffaloes since he arrived in 2023. Subsequently, he is the subject of heavy speculation about an NFL coaching jump. Rumors about him being a top candidate for the Dallas Cowboys or even a package deal with his son for the Las Vegas Raiders have dominated headlines.
However, Shedeur put the rumors to rest during an episode of his podcast, “2Legendary with Shedeur Sanders.” When asked if his father would remain at Colorado after key players like himself and Travis Hunter depart, he replied, “Yeah, Dad’s there for sure.” [15:00]
The former Cowboys superstar, who inked a five-year, $29.5 million deal with Colorado in December 2022 (as per BetMGM), has also repeatedly stated over the past couple of months that he’s committed to the Colorado football program.
Since taking over a team that went 1-11 before his arrival, Sanders has turned the Buffaloes into a conference championship contender. Colorado is 8-3 this season and has a 6-2 Big 12 conference record.
His recruiting strategy and infectious energy have transformed the team’s fortunes and made them one of college football’s hottest destinations. Despite Sanders’ declarations of loyalty, his name keeps popping up in NFL coaching chatter. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones addressed it last week, saying, “We’re way ahead of ourselves in terms of when and if he decides to go into coaching in the NFL.”
Jones praised Sanders’ recruiting skills as an advantage in college football but not necessarily a must-have for NFL success.
Jerry Jones on Deion Sanders to @1053thefan: "We're way ahead of ourselves in terms of when & if he decides to go into coaching in the NFL.
"One of his greatest skills (for) college is that he almost has no peer as far as being a recruiter…not a huge prerequisite for NFL."

Meanwhile, Sanders himself dismissed the rumors last week, stating, “I’m happy where I am. I got a kickstand down. That means I’m rested, I’m good. I love it here.”

The Buffaloes are marching through one of their best seasons in years, thanks to Coach Prime, his son, and Hunter, who’s the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Deion Sanders’ focus remains on sustaining the program’s upward trajectory and fulfilling the promises he has made to recruits.
Rumors of an NFL move will persist, but Sanders seems firmly planted in Boulder—for now.
