While it wasn’t the prettiest win, the Jacksonville Jaguars found a way to come back and beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-28. ESPN’s Adam Schefter took to social media on Oct. 7 to announce an insane statistic that shows just how competitive this 2025 NFL season has been. Now sitting at 2-3, many wonder if the Kansas City Chiefs will even make the playoffs after another horrendous primetime loss.

There Have Been 17 NFL Games With a Go-Ahead Score in the Final Minute
Dating back to the 1970 merger, there have never been this many go-ahead scores in the final minute of regulation. After all, this season featured the first tie the NFL has seen in a few years. When all was said and done on Monday Night Football, QB Trevor Lawrence turned a potential blunder into a game-winning touchdown as the Jaguars prevailed.
After Monday night’s Jaguars win, there now have been 17 games this season with a go-ahead score in the final minute of regulation, the most through five weeks of a season since the 1970 merger.

Lawrence had a pair of rushing touchdowns, but his go-ahead touchdown with 23 seconds left proved to be enough. Despite falling and spinning around on the ground, the Chiefs’ defense had no answer for Lawrence. The Jags’ QB finished 18/25 for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception, adding 10 carries for 54 yards with the two touchdowns.
On the other side, QB Patrick Mahomes was 29/41 for 318 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Shockingly, both Mahomes and Lawrence were their team’s leading rushers. Mahomes finished with six carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. Having dropped three of their first five, Kansas City has their work cut out for them moving forward.
Week 5 saw both the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills lose, leaving no remaining undefeated teams. Both conferences seem to be wide open, as blocked field goals and last-second touchdowns have been the standard of the season. Schefter’s statistic notes that there have never been as many go-ahead scores in the final minute through the first five weeks of a season.
Looking ahead, the Week 6 slate kicks off on Thursday Night Football with the 4-1 Eagles playing the 1-4 New York Giants. QB Jalen Hurts looks to rebound from the team’s first loss of the season, though it’s worth keeping an eye on the status of RB Saquon Barkley. As for the Giants, Dart finds himself No. 33 in the league, according to PFSN’s QB Impact Metric.
A slew of teams will return from their Week 5 Bye as the week comes to an end with another Monday Night Football doubleheader. Monday, Oct. 13 will see the Buffalo Bills play the Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears take on the Washington Commanders.
