With the Washington Commanders in town on Monday night, the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping to continue their hot streak and win their third consecutive game.
They’ll do so with two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Patrick Mahomes leading the way at quarterback. His legend is only continuing to grow as the 30-year-old surpassed another major milestone this week.
Patrick Mahomes Joins Elite Company
During the first half, it was announced by the NFL that Mahomes had joined Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning as the only players in history to surpass 40,000 passing yards in their first nine seasons, including playoffs.
Being mentioned in the same breath as Manning is a major accomplishment in itself, and the expectation is that this won’t be the first or last time Mahomes finds himself in the company of greatness. He’s already regarded as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks to ever play, and he has a trio of Super Bowl rings to back that up.

Mahomes, a former No. 10 overall pick, is in his eighth season as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback after essentially redshirting his rookie season behind Alex Smith. Including his first-half totals in Monday night’s game against the Commanders, he’s eclipsed 34,200 regular-season passing yards.
He has 5,814 passing yards across 21 playoff games, as well as 46 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. Only Tom Brady has more postseason passing touchdowns (88) than Mahomes. Coming into Week 8, Mahomes ranked eighth in the league among quarterbacks based on PFSN’s QB Impact metric.
Chiefs Trying to Hold Off Commanders After Uncharacteristic Half
After throwing for three touchdowns in last week’s 31-0 shutout win over the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs have reverted to an unrecognizable team. They’re above .500 with a 4-3 record, but they’ll have to defend their home turf against the Commanders to prevent some uncertainty.
Mahomes and the Chiefs enter the halftime intermission tied 7-7 with the Commanders. He has completed eight of his 15 pass attempts for 89 yards while also throwing a pair of interceptions; one interception went to cornerback Marshon Lattimore and the other to linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Serving as a testament to just how lackadaisical the first half has been for the Chiefs, Mahomes is their leading rusher. He’s carried the ball three times for 31 yards while their two starting running backs, Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, have combined for just 28 yards on the ground.
The Commanders, meanwhile, are starting Marcus Mariota at quarterback for the third time this season. Jayden Daniels missed two games with a knee sprain and is currently battling a hamstring strain.
