The New England Patriots have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 NFL season so far. After finishing with a 4-13 record in 2024, the Patriots are now 7-2 following their sixth consecutive win in Week 9. Much of the team’s success can be attributed to the development of quarterback Drake Maye, who has been looking like a star lately.
Through nine games, Maye has thrown for 2,285 yards with 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions. The quarterback also has 270 rushing yards and two scores on the ground so far. Maye is beginning to get some MVP hype, which will only increase after what Maye accomplished in Week 9.
What Record Did Drake Maye Break That Was Previously Set By Patrick Mahomes?
In Week 9, Maye threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns. The quarterback completed 65.5% of his passes and earned a 102.5 passer rating.
With that performance, Maye passed Patrick Mahomes for the longest streak of games with 200+ pass yards and a 100+ passer rating by a player under the age of 24 all-time. Maye has now achieved those numbers in eight-straight games, and the Patriots have won seven of those contests.
Any time you break a record previously owned by Mahomes, you know you’re doing something right. What’s even more incredible is that Maye only achieved those numbers twice during the 2024 season. The fact that he’s done it eight times in 2025 alone just shows how far the former first-round pick has come.
Now, Maye has his team atop the AFC East and well-positioned to host a playoff game. Of course, much has to be said about the changes the Patriots made this offseason as well.

Mike Vrabel was brought in to be the head coach, and Josh McDaniels was brought back to be the offensive coordinator once again. The team also improved the pass catcher group and the offensive line, and those factors, combined with Maye’s improvement, have helped turn this team around quickly.
Maye and the Patriots will next take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10. The Buccaneers are 6-2, so that matchup should be a good litmus test for the Patriots. After Week 10, the Patriots play the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, and New York Giants before finally having a bye in Week 14.
