NFL Analyst Rips Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones for Lack of Urgency Finding a Head Coach as Candidates Come Off the Board

NFL analyst Colin Cowherd rips Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for dragging his feet on hiring Dallas' next head coach.

It would not be Colin Cowherd if he weren’t disgruntled about something. He is griping now about the Las Vegas Raiders working on putting a coaching staff together, saying Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots already have theirs filled out. Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys and owner/general manager Jerry Jones have shown no urgency in hiring a head coach.

Colin Cowherd Calls Jerry Jones to Task for Not Yet Hiring a Head Coach

“Apparently, Jerry Jones, the Brian Schottenheimer move … that wasn’t Jerry’s idea. That was floated by his sons. His sons really like the idea, and Jerry is not down with it. He’s more down with Deion Sanders, that’s probably not going to happen too,” Cowherd said.

“There are some things in your life you can take time with … there are a couple of other things you have to do act urgently … hiring a head coach. Remember, in every industry in America, there are a finite number of elite. … Here are the Cowboys.”

Cowherd is also worried after the Cowboys hire a head coach that there will be no viable assistants left to hire after Pete Carroll, Liam Coen, and Mike Vrabel hire their staff. He is particularly worried about the lack of quality offensive line coaches around the country.

“Dallas is now going to get the third and fourth choice on O-line coaches, and there are not many O-line coaches in the league that you even know the name to,” Cowherd said. “At one point, Jimmy Johnson told me at any one time the NFL has got four great offensive line coaches. There’s a reason you know the names … because there are so few of them. … This needs urgency and the Cowboys have only interviewed three people in-person.”

Cowherd spoke to how quickly Jerod Mayo was fired after the last game. He was terminated, a press release went out, and the next day, Robert Kraft was looking for a new coach and shortly hired Vrabel.

“Before Mayo got to the locker room, they had a press release … by the next day, they contacted Mike Vrabel,” Cowherd said. “… Jan. 5, they played their last game. It took them eight days to figure out McCarthy is not staying. It has been 11 days since then.”

Cowherd thinks Jones is dragging his feet like he did with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb’s contract negotiations.

“Jerry Jones is going to do what he did with Dak Prescott. He’s gonna make you think he is playing poker,” Cowherd said. “He’s not showing his hand and then you end up paying about 40% more than you should.

“… Now, [Robert] Saleh is the No. 1 candidate with Mike McCarthy. … The Eagles this weekend will be playing in their eighth conference championship in 25 years — the Cowboys have been in none.”
