After the Dallas Cowboys sent Mike McCarthy packing, Cowboys Nation anticipated that the new coach would bring genuine enthusiasm and expertise to the position.
Instead, the team’s offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, who had never held a head coaching position and had not even called plays, was promoted by Jerry and Stephen Jones, shocking many. And that’s a formula for disaster, according to Colin Cowherd.
Colin Cowherd Slams Dallas Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer Hire for 2025 Season
Cowherd has been pretty vocal about his doubts since the Cowboys made Scottenheimer official. On his show “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” he didn’t hold back, calling the hire a big mistake and saying the former O.C. will likely be “one and done.”
As Cowherd put it, “Jerry will know by Thanksgiving he made a huge mistake. Forget the fact that Philadelphia and Washington will probably both blow them out in the division twice … One and done happens all the time now … I think Dallas is going to be humiliated on a lot of Sundays.”
Ouch.
Everyone has had a difficult time in the NFC East lately, and things are just going to get harder. With improved rosters and coaching, the Eagles and Commanders have both stepped up, making the battle extremely fierce.

And it certainly is no help that the entire NFC is packed, not just the East. If Dallas continues to play the way it has, Cowherd even hinted that the Texans, who have been quietly competing, might soon be the true Texas team.
Not only does Schottenheimer lack head coaching experience, but Dallas removed a coach after a 7-10 season and promoted someone who didn’t even call offensive plays, which irked the insider the most.
For a franchise known as “America’s Team,” that simply doesn’t invoke confidence. It’s difficult to accept for supporters expecting a resurgence this year.
Can Schottenheimer Defy Expectations With the Cowboys?
In 2025, what does this signify for the Cowboys? The truth is, it can be a rough ride. It will be challenging for Schottenheimer to lead this team through a competitive division and conference, even with a strong squad at his disposal.
Cowherd’s predictions might lead to a humiliating season for the Cowboys, one that will try fans’ patience and raise serious questions about Jones’ choice.
At the end of the day, Dallas has a chance to prove everyone wrong. But right now, the excitement is replaced with worry, and the pressure is on Schottenheimer to show he belongs at the helm. Otherwise, this season might just be remembered as the start of a long, rough chapter for the Cowboys.
