NFL Analyst Predicts $75 Million Quarterback Gets Cut, Giving QB-Needy Teams Like Raiders, Giants, Steelers Another Option

The Seattle Seahawks had a far better season than many were anticipating. With Pete Carroll out of the picture, it was anyone’s guess how they would turn out. Thanks to an excellent defense, they were in the playoff hunt until the last week of the season.

However, according to one analyst at PFSN, the team is going to make a drastic change this summer. Rather than continue to string along playoff-caliber seasons, the Seahawks will take the plunge on embracing a semi-rebuild.

Seattle Seahawks Predicted To Cut Geno Smith

On the back of a defense that finished sixth on PFN’s Defense+ metric, Seattle ended the 2024 season with a 10-7 record but couldn’t make it into the postseason on tiebreakers. Now, Ben Rolfe of PFSN predicts that the front office will take the plunge and cut quarterback Geno Smith from the squad.

And his reasoning is rather simple. “In 2025, he is set to have the eighth-highest cap hit at the position.” For a player that is yet to grade above a C+ on PFN’s QB+ metric, that kind of pay check is far too steep.

Despite playing with a good core of wide receivers, his numbers have never screamed superstar. And for a Seahawks team looking to go back to their regularly contending for Super Bowl berths, Smith might not be the guy statistically.

As a result, cutting him and taking a chance in the draft or with a different veteran might be their best bet. It would leave Smith open to joining a few other teams, though, particularly ones in desperate need of a quarterback.

Names like the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and the New York Jets might be at the top of these lists. While a few of them could find their guy in the 2025 NFL Draft, there aren’t enough top-of-the-class names in this year’s draft class to satisfy every team.

Thus, the man who finished with the fourth-highest passing yards in the league last season could be a viable candidate for any one of those squads. Even those drafting a quarterback could bring in Smith as a veteran bridge to teach the rookies.

Last season, Smith finished the year with 4,320 passing yards to go along with just 21 touchdowns. But he also gave up 15 interceptions and finished the year with a middle-of-the-pack passer rating of 93.2.

It might not be much, but for teams without any sort of reliable quarterback play, it might just be the best available option out there.
