From “Mr. Irrelevant” to potential franchise cornerstone, Brock Purdy’s rise has been nothing short of unexpected. As talks swirl about a massive contract extension, the San Francisco 49ers may be on the verge of committing long-term to a quarterback who’s already reshaped the team’s identity. But the bigger question looms: Can the Niners keep their loaded roster intact while handing Purdy the bag?

Could Brock Purdy Be the Next $300 Million QB?
Analyst Craig Carton says the 49ers quarterback’ could be on the brink of landing a massive contract extension. According to Carton, the 25-year-old Purdy might soon sign a five- to six-year deal worth $300 million, with roughly $250 million guaranteed — not bad for a guy who was once the last pick in the NFL Draft.
Carton made the bold claim on FS1’s “Breakfast Ball” earlier this week:
“Wrap your mind around this,” Carton said. “Five- or six-year deal with the first number of the deal being a three, meaning $300 million. There’s some debate as to how much of that deal would be guaranteed. They’d like it to be close to $250 [million] guaranteed. There’s some pushback on that from San Francisco, but I was told the deal is a lot closer to happening than not happening, and he’s going to be a $300 million man.”

If the extension goes through, it will be one of the richest in 49ers history and a sign of just how committed they are to Purdy as the face of the franchise. But it also sparks questions about the roster’s long-term future. Can the team afford to keep its core together while shelling out that kind of cash at quarterback?
Carton acknowledged that concern, noting that a blockbuster QB deal could tighten the budget around Purdy. But based on the numbers, it’s tough to argue that he hasn’t earned it.
In 2023, Purdy threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns with a league-best grade in PFSN’s QB+ metric. His numbers dipped a bit last season — 3,864 yards and 20 TDs — but he stayed efficient and consistent. Beyond the stat sheet, Purdy brings something even harder to define: leadership.
Purdy Praised for His Leadership
Critics still call him a “game manager” propped up by a stacked offense, but plenty of analysts see it differently. Former NFL scout John Middlekauff said on the “Colin Cowherd Podcast” that while Purdy may not have the raw talent of Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady, he gives off a similar vibe in the way he lifts the locker room.
“There’s just something about him,” Middlekauff said.
Veterans like Fred Warner and Nick Bosa backed Purdy even before he became the starter. That type of support doesn’t come easy. Deebo Samuel—who once asked for a trade—was publicly praising Purdy as the team pushed toward a Super Bowl appearance. That shift speaks volumes.
And the contrast is clear when you look at QBs like Russell Wilson and Cam Newton, who both lost their locker rooms when things went sideways. That’s not happening in San Francisco. Purdy hasn’t just earned respect—he’s earned trust.
For the 49ers, locking in Purdy isn’t just about finding a franchise quarterback. It’s about making sure their leader, the guy who’s already brought stability and belief, is in place for the long haul.
