‘Next Thing Now Is To Win It’ — DeMarcus Lawrence on Being the Cowboys’ Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Nominee

DeMarcus Lawrence reflects on the honor to be the Dallas Cowboys' Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee and his reason for giving back.

Dallas Cowboys edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence spoke about his nomination as the team’s representative for the 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

The 10-year veteran said this makes him proud because he gets to represent the Cowboys and his family.

DeMarcus Lawrence Speaks About His Nomination

“Next thing now is to win it, man. Keep doing what I’m doing in the community, spreading love, and that’s what it’s all about,” Lawrence said.

He also said he prides himself on doing the right thing — even when people aren’t looking, and the spotlight isn’t on him. This is something he takes beyond the football field, saying he preaches this sentiment to his own family every day as well.

“That’s just the standard I want to live by. Definitely going to keep doing what I’m doing, doesn’t matter who’s watching, just me as a person.”

Lawrence has given back both to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and his home state of South Carolina.

During his time in Dallas, he has been involved with the North Texas Food Bank, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the Big Thought nonprofit organization. All of this is on the theme of what brings him the most joy: giving back to kids, something he says warms his heart.

“I feel my father being in my life and being by my side through all my transgressions really showed me that everybody needs that. And I just want to make sure I’m giving the community what my dad gave me,” the three-time Pro Bowler said.

“Tank” is also a known locker room leader for the Cowboys, bringing unmatched leadership.

Lawrence Sees Respect From His Team

On Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said the team is proud of him because of his impact on multiple communities.

“We’re all really pumped for him to be one of those nominees this year. It’s a great honor and one who’s so deserving. This is a guy who’s got a huge heart and cares, wears it, and he’s one of the very best teammates we have,” Quinn said.

A social media video posted by the Cowboys showed QB Dak Prescott telling Lawrence he was this year’s nominee for the Cowboys.

Prescott was the NFL’s 2022 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year and told Lawrence he was “passing the torch,” and he knew he would do well with it.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award honors one player yearly for their commitment to community work and distinction on the field. One representative is chosen from each of the 32 teams.

So far in his career, Lawrence has played 132 games and has recorded 417 combined total tackles, 58.5 sacks, and two interceptions.
