Giants 2024 Free Agents: Saquon Barkley Not the Only Star Hitting the Market

Saquon Barkley generates all the buzz, but he isn't the only notable New York Giants player set to hit NFL free agency next month.

The New York Giants are staring at a pivotal offseason. A year after surprisingly making it to the NFC Divisional Round, the Giants went 6-11 in 2023 and now own the sixth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Daniel Jones’ status as the franchise quarterback is unclear. The Giants also have a large group of players primed for NFL free agency, including one of the best offensive players in football.

Who Are the New York Giants’ 2024 Free Agents?

RB Saquon Barkley

Is Saquon Barkley set to be the next big-name running back frustrated by NFL free agency?

An electrifying talent when healthy, Barkley missed three games last season due to an ankle sprain. He also saw his rushing efficiency drop off and rarely delivered the kinds of big plays he’s known for.

When the dust settled, Barkley rushed 247 times for 962 yards and six touchdowns while adding 41 catches for 280 yards and four touchdowns in the passing game.

Barkley was playing under a reworked franchise tag, which carried a base salary of $10 million. If general manager Joe Schoen decides to tag Barkley this time, he’ll be forced to increase the salary by 20%, thus paying him roughly $12 million.

At 27 years old, is the injury-prone Barkley worth more than what he made last season?

It’s hard to make that case. Overpaying for running backs is bad business in today’s NFL. As good as Barkley is, he might have to move on.

S Xavier McKinney

The second round of the 2020 NFL Draft produced an impressive group of NFL safeties.

Antoine Winfield Jr., Kyle Dugger, and Xavier McKinney are all among the best in the game — and all are hitting free agency. With safety-needy teams able to choose from multiple elite options, players might find it difficult to drive up their price tags.

Nevertheless, McKinney is worth a big contract.

The Alabama product will turn 25 in August and is coming off the most productive season of his career. Starting in all 17 games, McKinney racked up 116 tackles, one quarterback hit, 11 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and three interceptions. He’s not spectacular, but he’s a very good safety.

With so many questions on offense, the Giants can’t afford to let the defense also take a step back. It’ll cost them, but New York should do what it takes to re-sign McKinney.

CB Adoree’ Jackson

It’s a different story with Adoree’ Jackson. A first-round pick in 2017, Jackson joined the Giants in 2021 after being cut by the Tennessee Titans. He was solid over his first two seasons in New York, but the veteran CB struggled for much of 2023 while playing 88% of the defensive snaps.

Jackson finished with 63 tackles, eight pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one interception — which was returned 76 yards for a touchdown.

Jackson is easily replaceable, and New York should look to upgrade. That said, if he’s open to taking a lesser contract and accepting a reduced role, the Giants could bring him back to provide veteran depth.

QB Tyrod Taylor

The Giants are one of those teams that really need a good backup quarterback. Even if they run it back with Daniel Jones, they can’t hitch their wagon to a run-happy QB who’s coming off a torn ACL and dealt with other injuries throughout his career.

And if New York somehow lands a new franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft, it’ll need high-level insurance in case the rookie isn’t ready.

So, is Tyrod Taylor a good option? He certainly isn’t the worst.

In 2023, Taylor started five games and won two of them. He threw five touchdowns compared to just three interceptions and still showed the ability to run when necessary. As always, Taylor was a model professional.

Perhaps the Giants pursue someone with more upside, such as Ryan Tannehill, Jimmy Garoppolo or even Mac Jones. But Taylor’s acceptance of his role — and ability to play it at a reasonably high level — arguably make him the best fit.
