NBA Trade Rumors: Insider Sheds Light on ‘Wildcard’ Complicating Raptors’ Deadline Plans

For the raptors one issue has emerged as a quiet variable that could reshape Toronto's trade deadline plans in unexpected ways.

As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the Toronto Raptors find themselves at a crossroads. While the front office is expected to explore roster upgrades, uncertainty surrounding Jakob Poeltl’s health has introduced a major complication into those plans.

NBA Insider Reveals Toronto Raptors’ One Glaring Issue As Trade Deadline Approaches

Raptors beat writer Josh Lewenberg highlighted the issue in a post on X, explaining how Poeltl’s situation could shape Toronto’s approach.

“There is growing concern surrounding Jakob Poeltl’s nagging back injury. His health could be the wildcard that determines how the Raptors approach the upcoming trade deadline,” Lewenberg shared while reporting for TSN Sports.

Poeltl is currently out indefinitely with a lower back strain that has lingered longer than expected. The Raptors have confirmed there is no timeline for his return, and that uncertainty has made it difficult for Toronto to assess his trade value.

The starting center last played on Dec. 21, 2025, against the Brooklyn Nets logging just seven minutes and scoring two points before exiting the game.

This season, Poeltl has appeared in only 21 games. He has missed 26 contests overall and has not played in 17 straight games, leaving a significant hole in the middle of Toronto’s rotation.

Despite limited availability, he has been productive when healthy, averaging 9.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting an efficient 69.3% from the field in 25.3 minutes per night.

Around the league, there is a growing sense that the Raptors may be open to moving Poeltl for the first time since reacquiring him. Toronto originally traded for the seven-foot center to make a short-term push toward the playoffs, giving up the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft in the process. That decision now looms large as the franchise reassesses its direction.

Poeltl’s contract further complicates matters. He is set to begin a four-year, $104 million contract extension in July 2026, and over the next three seasons, he is owed more than $84 million.

That financial commitment means his deal would almost certainly need to be part of any major trade if Toronto decides to pursue a bigger name.

Lewenberg has previously reported that rival teams believe the Raptors are willing to part with some combination of RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Poeltl ahead of the deadline.

At the same time, Toronto has been reluctant to include multiple first-round picks in trade talks, while Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles are viewed as untouchable pieces.

For now, Poeltl’s health remains the central question. If he returns soon, Toronto could regain leverage and flexibility. If not, his lingering back issue may force the Raptors to either stay patient or rethink how aggressively they approach the deadline.
