Suns Finally Make $149.8 Million Decision With Devin Booker’s Future in Question, NBA Insider Reports

Amid the uncertainty surrounding the Phoenix Suns’ future, the organization is reportedly set to offer superstar shooting guard Devin Booker a lucrative contract extension.

Suns Expected To Present Devin Booker With $149.8 Million Extension

Phoenix failed to meet expectations during the 2024-25 NBA season, serving as arguably the league’s biggest disappointment. Despite entering the campaign with title hopes, its Big 3-led squad, featuring Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, finished 11th in the Western Conference (36-46). That marked a 13-win drop-off from last year’s sixth-place finish (49-33).

After missing out on the play-in tournament, the Suns fired coach Mike Budenholzer on Monday, just one year into his five-year, $50 million contract. Additionally, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the franchise “is expected to engage in trade conversations involving Durant and will have discussions on the future of Beal.”

However, Phoenix is not only planning to retain Booker but, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, will look to extend the four-time All-Star for the foreseeable future.

“Booker is eligible to sign a two-year, $149.8 million extension this summer, which Phoenix is expected to offer, sources said,” Windhorst wrote on Tuesday.

Booker, 28, has three years remaining on his four-year, $220.4 million contract and isn’t set to hit free agency until 2028. A two-year extension would run through the 2029-30 season, potentially covering the rest of his prime.

Booker Wins Suns Through And Through

The two-time All-NBA selectee has spent his entire career with Phoenix after being drafted No. 13 by the organization in the 2015 NBA Draft. However, after a grueling campaign, in which Booker reportedly clashed with Budenholzer, the Suns may need to prove they can construct a championship contender around him.

“It’s been a slow bleed out,” Booker said after Phoenix was officially eliminated from playoff contention. “I’ve been feeling this way for the majority of the season.”

Suns owner Mat Ishbia has shown aggressiveness in making roster moves and big-name coaching hires. Unfortunately for Phoenix, its past decisions, including acquiring Durant and Beal, have limited the team’s future flexibility.

Thus, it will likely bank heavily on its return in a potential Durant deal. Regardless, Windhorst noted that Booker has “subtly let it be known he will have more to say going forward.”

“[I need] to be a leader and use my voice more,” Booker said last week, acknowledging that he was referencing “everybody” (including players, coaches and management).

As such, it appears Suns fans can expect Booker to have considerable input in all of the organization’s offseason moves.
