The San Antonio Spurs are no longer just building a future around Victor Wembanyama – they might be angling to dominate the present. Armed with the No. 2 and No. 14 picks in the 2025 NBA Draft and a few promising young players, San Antonio has one of the strongest trade packages in the league.
And now, there’s a bold new idea floating around: turn all of it into Giannis Antetokounmpo. A superstar shake-up like this would flip the entire NBA on its head, and the Spurs know it.
Spurs Target Giannis Antetokounmpo as Centerpiece of Win-Now Strategy
According to Bjorn Bergstrom of College Sports Network, the Spurs are projected to pursue a blockbuster trade that would bring two-time MVP Antetokounmpo to San Antonio. The CSN mock draft projection features San Antonio shipping out the No. 2 and No. 14 picks, along with guard Devin Vassell and forward Keldon Johnson, to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Antetokounmpo.
It’s an all-in swing and maybe the perfect one. “This move,” Bergstrom notes, “would catapult the Spurs into contender status overnight.” And it’s hard to argue. The Spurs already have the most unique defensive player in the world, Victor Wembanyama. Add Antetokounmpo, who just averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists this past season, and you’ve got two of the most dominant forces in basketball sharing the same frontcourt.

It’s also worth noting that Antetokounmpo is reportedly open-minded to a trade. If that door is truly open, every team in the league will be scrambling to get an offer on the table. But none may be better positioned than the Spurs.
With De’Aaron Fox already in the mix after a midseason acquisition, San Antonio is closer to winning than people think. Fox was averaging 19.7 points and 6.8 assists before his injury, and he brings speed and shot creation – two things this Spurs team has long needed.
Now consider this trio: Fox, Antetokounmpo and Wemby. It’s terrifying on both ends of the floor and could be the most lethal two-way core in the league
Antetokounmpo’s Two-Way Brilliance Could Make Spurs a Championship Contender
Antetokounmpo and Wemby would be an unprecedented pairing. The Greek Freak brings brute force and relentless rim pressure, while Wembanyama offers elite shot-blocking and stretch potential. They’d form a wall around the rim and give opposing offenses nightmares in transition.
Wembanyama’s rise has been meteoric. He was on track for All-NBA and Defensive Player of the Year honors before a season-ending setback. He’s only going to get better. What the Spurs need is a championship-tested partner who can match his intensity and lead beside him.
Antetokounmpo is that guy. He already has a ring. He’s still in his prime. And he’s built to win. The cost will be steep, though. Losing Vassell, Johnson, and two lottery picks would mean saying goodbye to depth and future upside. But the Spurs have never been about half-measures. If there’s a path to add one of the greatest players of this generation and maximize Wemby’s rookie contract window, they’ll explore it.
