Spurs May Hold Off on Kevin Durant Trade to Chase Bigger Star for Wembanyama

As the NBA offseason heats up, the Spurs are making headlines for a potential blockbuster trade to land Durant from the Phoenix Suns, or at least, they were. According to recent reports, the focus is shifting to what the Spurs might not do.

Last season, Durant was still very productive. At 36, he remained one of the league’s most efficient scorers, ranking sixth in points per game. He had several standout performances, including a 42-point game against Cleveland and a 38-point night versus Milwaukee. Although the Suns didn’t reach the playoffs, Durant was solid, averaging 26.6 points per game.

Now, the former MVP wants to join a team that can compete for a championship. The Spurs were once seen as a top choice. But in a twist, they’re reportedly stepping back from the Durant chase. Instead, they may save their assets for a younger star who better fits Victor Wembanyama’s timeline.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Spurs are “stocking their assets for potentially a bigger move, a bigger player, someone who may fit their timeline.” As a trusted NBA insider, Charania’s words hold significant weight. This recent report has sent shockwaves through the league, as the Spurs had recently been closely linked to Durant.

Suggesting their lack of motivation, Charania added, “In their minds, they have a ton of assets to where if a guy becomes available on that timeline, potentially, you go out and make that deal. It’s not to say they don’t have interest in Kevin Durant. They do. And potentially they would make an offer, and I’m sure they have discussed different frameworks. What other teams are offering is a little more aggressive.”

Now, both Suns and Spurs fans are just wondering if San Antonio will skip out on the former MVP. Big names like Luka Dončić, Trae Young, or Jayson Tatum might become available in 12 to 18 months.

The Spurs look like they’re biding their time, waiting for the perfect chance to snag one of those big-name stars. However, the race to land Durant is still wide open. But if the Spurs back off, the Suns must look into other possibilities.
