LeBron James is officially headed to the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania announced.
The Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers were considered “frontrunners” for the 22-time All-Star, but following the signing, Charania ultimately discloses the real reason James chose the 76ers instead.
Shams Charania Discloses the Real Reason Why LeBron James Chose the 76ers
Charania first broke the news on X, stating that James is signing with the 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal that includes a player option. Shortly after, the insider appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN to discuss the move.
“Everyone is stunned in the NBA, right? Like when you think about LeBron James, Cleveland, Miami, those teams are going to be mentioned as front-runners. But we’ve been saying on this program for the last two and a half weeks, Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia.”
“There was a reason why we kept mentioning Philly, because when you look at their roster, they have Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid. And we were all going to take whatever LeBron James, his intentions were at face value. He made it very clear from the beginning.”
Charania noted that, as evidenced by his veteran minimum level contract, James wasn’t making a financially driven decision, and his priority is winning at a “high level,” while having the opportunity to “compete for a championship”
“It’s not about legacy of going back to Cleveland. It’s not about going to Miami where he also played,” Charania continued. “Those were legacy plays with a chance to win a championship, right? But how do you give yourself the best chance? And so he feels joining the Sixers, it’s about winning. It’s about competing.”

Charania also mentioned that the roster was the main reason why James chose the Sixers.
““The Sixers were not even in the picture, on the map, until Bob Myers traded for Jaylen Brown… LeBron looked at that roster, he looked at the Cavs roster, he looked at the Heat roster and he is choosing the Philadelphia 76ers,” Charania said.
If one thing is for certain, Philadelphia will have no issue competing and playing at a high level in 2026. The 76ers’ starting lineup features All-NBA guard Tyrese Maxey and All-rookie first team member V.J. Edgecombe in the backcourt.
Finals MVP and five-time NBA All-Star, Jaylen brown, recently acquired from the Boston Celtics, will operate on the wing, while former league MVP and five-time All-NBA selection Joel Embiid handles the front-court duties.

Now, the 76ers add one of the greatest NBA players of all time, who is still playing at an extremely high level entering his age-41 season. James completes this star-studded unit, making them a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.
Time will tell if James made the right decision in free agency, but for now, the Philadelphia 76ers appear to have as good a chance as any team in the league to win a championship.
