‘Outrageous’ – NBA World Reacts to Warriors Inking 4-Time Champion Draymond Green to $27.7 Million Deal

NBA world reacts as Draymond Green inks a new contract with the Golden State Warriors.

After missing out on the signature of LeBron James, the Golden State Warriors are bringing Draymond Green back on a one-year, $27.7 million contract.

As news of the agreement broke, the NBA world was quick to pan the Warriors for valuing sentimentality over strategy.

NBA World Reacts as Draymond Green Pens Warriors Extension

Green had earlier declined the same one-year, $27.7 million player option to allow the Warriors to bolster their roster in free agency. However, after James decided to join the Philadelphia 76ers, the Warriors moved to extend Green’s stay with the franchise on the same terms.

A Warriors fan account shared their frustration at the franchise’s work this offseason.

“Only a 1 year deal interesting… Lemme guess next is GP2 and they call it an offseason?” They wrote on X.

Several in the NBA world felt that the Warriors gave Green more than he is worth at age 36.

“Just an outrageous number,” wrote one user.

“Overpay of doom and despair,” chimed in another fan.

Warriors insider Anthony Slater explained the workings of Green’s one-year contract.

“Despite being eligible, there is not a no-trade clause in Draymond Green’s one-year contract, per source. It’s the same as the player option he gave up. Warriors would’ve given longer-term deal if they landed LeBron James, but didn’t,” he wrote.

However, NBA analyst Yossi Gozlan explained that Green’s one-year contract allows him to veto any trade. Players on one-year contracts can lose valuable Bird rights through trades, which might hurt their future value in free agency. So, they automatically get a de facto veto power and must consent to any trade.

“Draymond Green will have veto rights over a trade this year by signing a one-year deal. He could waive it, but he’d lose Bird rights if traded. The Warriors are now over the tax and first apron, meaning De’Anthony Melton will be re-signed with the $6.1 million taxpayer mid-level,” he wrote.

SI writer Alex Golden suggested trading Green to the Warriors for Trey Murphy III. It is worth noting that Green would have to agree to any possible trade.

“The perfect amount for a Trey Murphy III swap,” he wrote.

Another influencer claimed that Green may have fleeced the Warriors with this agreement.

“Tremendous bag work,” they wrote.

Green has been with the Warriors since being drafted by the franchise in 2012. He has won four NBA titles in Golden State and will have his sights set on a bounce-back season.

The Warriors missed the playoffs last season amid injuries to Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler.
