The MVP race is heating up in the NBA landscape with only a few games left in the season. While logically, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has seemingly locked the award up, there are many fans who are leaning towards the 3-time MVP Nikola Jokic.
While Jokic’s season has been arguably the best of his career, Gilgeous-Alexander has been doing some other-worldly things as well on the court, which has led to the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 63-12 record for the top seed out West.
Gilgeous-Alexander also leads the NBA in scoring as well as several other metrics. Regardless, this MVP race comes down to those two men.
Some NBA Fans Crown Nikola Jokic For MVP
NBA on X is not a place for informed takes on the league often, but they’re typically very loud. With Gilgeous-Alexander being listed as the No. 1 choice for MVP by an overwhelming margin, some fans did not agree with it.
Jokic is an amazing player and has a claim to win the NBA MVP, especially considering his amazing game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jokic finished with 61 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds in 53 minutes of playing time as the Nuggets lost in double overtime. The fan response following that was interesting.
While the fans are passionate in support of Jokic, there’s not a lot of time left in the season for a late push. With Jokic trailing by a wide margin, it would take a miracle to pull ahead in the voting.
Who Wins The NBA MVP?
While Jokic does have his supporters, and rightfully so, the NBA MVP award will almost certainly go to Gilgeous-Alexander. Two seasons prior, the Thunder seemed far away from a team that would be breaking their franchise record for regular season wins.
The Thunder could potentially win anywhere from 67-70 games to close out the season, which is a rare feat to complete in the NBA. Jokic’s Nuggets team has been solid throughout the year with a few losing streaks, but Jokic himself is playing the best basketball of his life, as he averages 29.7 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 10.2 assists for the year on 57.5% shooting from the field.
So, who wins MVP this season? While the fans online are loud and supportive for their pick, it will likely be Gilgeous-Alexander’s award.
This could serve as motivation for Jokic to go and win another NBA championship, but the Thunder will be heavily favored throughout the NBA playoffs.
