Two of the most highly-touted first overall picks in the last decade will face each other on the second night of the 2025-26 NBA campaign. This year’s top selection, Cooper Flagg, makes his debut against Victor Wembanyama, the 2023 first overall pick, in a matchup that puts two generational talents on the same court.

How Will Cooper Flagg’s Rookie Season Differ from Victor Wembanyama’s?
While Wembanyama hit his stride instantly and became one of the best players in the world, Flagg looks to do the same and relishes the challenge of going against the 7-foot-4-inch phenom.
Many first-round picks head to rebuilding teams, where their development becomes the franchise’s top priority. However, that has not been the case for Flagg and the 2024 first-round selection, Zaccharie Risacher, over the last two summers.
Wembanyama and Flagg entered the league in very different situations. The San Antonio Spurs received the 2023 first overall pick in the middle of a rebuild, so Wembanyama’s development was the highest priority, and the team finished with a 22-60 record. In his first year, he averaged 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds, and he led the NBA with a whopping 3.6 blocks per contest. As a result, Wembanyama won Rookie of the Year and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
In contrast, Flagg joins a Dallas Mavericks team looking to compete and make a deep playoff run. They made the NBA finals just two seasons ago. His development is important, but Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, when he returns from injury, will be ahead of Flagg in the offensive pecking order.
The former Duke University product put up 19.2 points, 4.2 assists, and 7.5 rebounds per game in college. Flagg’s frame and versatile skill set enable him to play multiple positions, and head coach Jason Kidd even experimented with the 18-year-old at point guard in two preseason contests.
With Irving hurt, both first overall picks will be asked to do more for their respective squads. Expect Flagg to handle the ball and facilitate in the pick-and-roll. It will be fascinating to see how he performs in the paint and on switches against Wembanyama’s dominant defense. This highly anticipated matchup of number one picks is set to tip off on Oct. 22 on ESPN at 9:30 p.m. ET.
