LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers is the most significant topic of discussion heading into the NBA season, and Luka Dončić recently shared his thoughts on playing alongside the four-time NBA champion, who is entering Year 23 of an illustrious and accomplished career.
Since the Lakers traded for Dončić, James’ role on the team has diminished, as the 26-year-old is now expected to take the reins as the franchise cornerstone. Since this transition process from Dončić to James is somewhat complex, one should wonder how Dončić feels about being teammates with James now.

Luka Dončić Is Undaunted by the Challenges of Playing Alongside LeBron James
Given that James has already accomplished more than many could have predicted, he is free to retire at any time. The Lakers star has already made it clear that he does not want to drag out his career, but has refrained from getting into any specifics.
James created quite a lot of commotion recently by hinting at a second decision, leaving the Lakers or retiring, and then used all the attention he garnered to promote an alcoholic product. Although this was an excellent marketing stunt, it drew criticism from several members of the basketball community for James’s dramatic and “corny” behavior.
Throughout James’ career, his teammates have reportedly felt a greater sense of pressure or scrutiny. While Dončić is likely to face the same if the Lakers underperform in the upcoming 2025-2026 season, he did not hesitate when declaring his desire to play alongside James for a full season together.
An ESPN report from NBA Insider Dave McMenamin revealed that Dončić has not questioned James about his potential retirement out of respect for his teammates’ process. It also showed that Dončić did not feel intimidated by all the drama that accompanies playing alongside James.
“Dončić, who idolized James growing up, has enjoyed their partnership and believes James is vital to L.A.’s ability to win now, sources said. He is also undaunted by any spectacle or circus that could come with pairing up with James as he closes out his career, because Dončić already experienced an aging legend on his farewell tour when Dirk Nowitzki’s last season with the Dallas Mavericks coincided with Dončić’s rookie year. Dončić found the time with Nowitzki to be invaluable…”
If both James and Dončić are healthy, the Lakers have a fighting chance against any of the teams in the West. The organization also brought in other players, such as Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, to improve their defense. This team is looking to win it all this upcoming season, and Dončić rightly believes that James is an integral part of that process.
While Dirk Nowitzki’s farewell tour will pale in comparison to James’ future tour, Dončić’s statement also makes it clear that he is more than willing to take a step back and let James enjoy the limelight, especially if it means he gains invaluable experience or advice in the process.
In any case, James and Dončić are expected to try to bring the Lakers a championship this season.
