ESPN’s Tim MacMahon Reveals Only Path for LeBron James To Reunite With Former Championship Teammates on Mavericks

ESPN's Tim MacMahon explains the only realistic scenario for LeBron James to join Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis in Dallas, but questions if it makes sense.

LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers continues to generate buzz as NBA free agency news simmers. Debates and rumors of the four-time NBA champion’s possible departure from LA and his potential landing spots rage on, although there has been no concrete response from James himself yet.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon recently weighed in on James’ path to get to the Dallas Mavericks, a team he has been linked with following the team’s free agency moves so far.

How LeBron James Could Join Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis in Dallas

Speaking on ESPN’s “Get Up,” MacMahon weighed in on what the Mavericks could offer for James, and if the move made sense for both parties. “Is there a deal to be made with a trade from the Mavericks to get LeBron? You could punch it up in the trade machine. All the Mavericks have to do is completely gut the rotation,” he said.

“Give up guys like Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington. You know, maybe a Naji Marshall, Max Christie. What? You’re giving up three or four rotation players for potentially a ring-chasing retirement tour that doesn’t make sense for Dallas.”

MacMahon further added that the move did not make sense for James, and a buyout would be his option. “Now, why would the Lakers do that? That’s a great question. I don’t have a good answer for that one. But yeah, that is the only path I could see for LeBron James to come join Kyrie, Anthony Davis, and a couple of his former championship teammates in Dallas.”

Earlier reports suggested that the only way the Mavericks would consider adding the NBA’s leading scorer to their fold was through a buyout. The links to Dallas do not come as a surprise. James has played with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, both of whom he has won championships with in 2016 and 2020, respectively.

The connection between James and his former teammates adds intrigue to the speculation. Irving, who helped James deliver Cleveland’s first NBA championship in 2016, remains with the Mavericks despite suffering a season-ending ACL injury in March 2025.

Davis, James’ co-star during the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, was traded to Dallas in February 2025 as part of the blockbuster deal that brought Luka DonÄŤić to Los Angeles.

Lakers Build Around Luka Dončić as James Weighs Options

James’ future with the Lakers came under discussion after the team’s moves signaled building the team around superstar guard DonÄŤić. The trade that brought the Slovenian star to Los Angeles marked a significant shift in the franchise’s direction, positioning the 26-year-old as the centerpiece of their championship aspirations.

Ahead of free agency, the 40-year-old exercised his $52.6 million player option, which also came with a cryptic message from his power agent, Rich Paul. The Klutch Sports head honcho dropped a brow-raising message about evaluating what was best for the veteran, who remains firm on winning a championship (his fifth) as the main objective.

The Lakers superstar turns 41 this December, and despite battling Father Time, he has shown he remains a force. He ended this past season averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 70 regular-season games. These numbers demonstrate that James continues to produce at an elite level even as he approaches his 22nd NBA season.

Despite their solid 50-32 run, James, DonÄŤić, and LA were handed a first-round exit by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The disappointing playoff result highlighted the team’s need for additional pieces to complement their star duo. Now, as the team looks to build a contending roster around the pair, only time will tell if James will suit up as a Laker for the 2025-26 NBA season.

The speculation surrounding James’ future reflects the broader challenges facing aging superstars in today’s NBA. With championship windows narrowing and younger stars emerging, veterans like James must carefully weigh their options to maximize their remaining opportunities for title contention.
