It’s been just 25 days since the Dallas Mavericks’ season ended, and Klay Thompson is already preparing for the next one.
Thompson was on the court when the Memphis Grizzlies knocked off Dallas 120-106 to eliminate the Mavs from the play-in tournament, capping off an underwhelming year. But instead of dwelling on the loss, the 35-year-old is already back in the gym, focused on being in top shape for the 2025-26 season.
Klay Thompson Takes Inspiration From Former NBA Great Kobe Bryant
Thompson is coming off a solid season in which he started 72 games for Dallas — his most starts since 2019 and more than any other Maverick. He averaged 14.0 points and 2.0 assists. While those numbers are the lowest he’s posted in the past decade, the five-time All-Star remains a key part of Jason Kidd’s rotation.
Thompson posted a few photos on Instagram from a recent workout session. One of the images featured a mural of Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
Bryant, known as the “Black Mamba,” retired in 2016 and is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. Bryant died in 2020 in a helicopter crash along with eight others, but he remains a powerful influence on today’s players.
Thompson, who played against Bryant early in his career, included this caption alongside the mural:
“When u feel like u stuck in the mud, ask yourself what would Mamba do.”
“Mamba Mentality” wasn’t just a phrase Bryant tossed around. It was a mindset. His dedication, work ethic, and drive continue to motivate players long after his tragic passing.
Over his 20-year career, Bryant led the Lakers to five NBA championships. He won one MVP award and two Finals MVPs, made 18 All-Star appearances, earned 11 All-NBA First-Team selections, and led the league in scoring in 2006 and 2007.
A string of injuries and Luka Dončić’s departure in February contributed to Dallas’ midseason slump. The Mavs finished with just 39 wins and missed the playoffs for only the second time in five years. Thompson and his teammates will look to regroup this offseason, hoping a healthy roster can power a return to the NBA Finals in 2026.
But the most exciting news in Dallas is the NBA Draft Lottery result. Despite poor odds, the Mavericks won the lottery and will select first in the 2025 NBA Draft.
