Former 9-Year NBA Veteran Pushes Back Against Giannis Antetokounmpo-to-Spurs Talk

Giannis Antetokounmpo went down with a right calf strain during their 113-109 win over the Detroit Pistons last week. The two-time MVP collapsed while running back on defense in the first quarter, immediately grabbing his lower leg and never returning. The team later confirmed a calf strain, projecting a recovery window of two to four weeks.

With Antetokounmpo sidelined, trade rumors have surged. So much that fans and parody accounts briefly convinced people he’d already been dealt to the Spurs. Now, NBA veteran Chandler Parsons has weighed in, explaining why San Antonio shouldn’t pursue a trade for the Bucks star.

Chandler Parsons on Why the Spurs Should Not Trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo Right Now

During an appearance on ‘Run It Back‘, Parsons delivered one of the strongest arguments yet against the idea of San Antonio pushing their chips in for Antetokounmpo.

Parsons acknowledged the appeal of pairing the Spurs’ young core with a generational talent like Giannis. But after watching San Antonio’s recent growth, he believes the franchise would be risking something much more valuable.

“To think Giannis and when we are on the floor together is awesome, especially the next two to three to four years, however long Giannis is going to be the Giannis we know today,” Parsons said.

“Now, when I see games like last night, and I see the jump and the versatility that Stephon Castle has, and the way Dylan Harper is continuing to get better and better, and the things I have seen De’Aaron Fox do for years, and that core with Sochan and Keldon Johnson and Vassell, like, they have built something so special there. Homegrown, all there, all bought in.”

Parsons continued by emphasizing how rare it is for a young team to have already chemistry, balance, and multiple players capable of taking over games.

“They do not care about who gets the credit. They do not care about who is the leading scorer that day. They just play hard and they win,” he said.

“So yes, it is appealing to go and get a Giannis, but you built this from scratch. You are just going to give up on that when the future is so bright and you are good enough now to compete?”

Parsons went so far as to say he believes San Antonio might already be the second-best team in the Western Conference.

“That is over the Lakers, over the Nuggets, over the Rockets,” Parsons insisted. “I think you have to look at all options, but I am on the fence now because I have seen too much. I have seen too much potential, and I have seen too much production right now not to let this play out.”

The Spurs are currently in the 5th seed in the Western Conference with 17 wins and just seven losses. Meanwhile, the Bucks are standing in 10th position in the Eastern Conference with 11 wins and 15 losses.

Antetokounmpo remains with the Bucks as of the time of writing, and the team is expected to reevaluate his calf injury over the next few weeks.
