Celtics’ Asking Price for Jrue Holiday Revealed as Trade Rumors Swirl Entering Boston’s Crucial Offseason

The Boston Celtics’ expectations in a potential Jrue Holiday trade have finally come into focus. Despite entering the postseason as defending NBA champions with a shot at back-to-back titles, Boston fell short, eliminated by the New York Knicks in the second round.

With one of the most expensive payrolls in the league, it’s widely expected that the Celtics will make major changes this offseason.

Holiday has emerged as one of the likeliest trade candidates. Though the veteran guard helped Boston win a championship in his first season, his age and limited impact in this year’s playoffs may have shifted the team’s outlook. Naturally, fans are curious about what kind of return Boston is seeking for him.

Are the Boston Celtics “Disrespecting” Jrue Holiday?

John Moore, senior NBA writer for Action Network and editor emeritus of “Hardwood Paroxysm,” reported that longtime NBA insider Marc Stein has a clear read on Boston’s asking price.

“Hall of Famer Marc Stein reported this weekend that Boston is, in fact, listening to trade offers for Holiday, something most people assumed. While the focus has been on reducing payroll, sources have told the Paroxysm that Boston is setting the price at a first-round pick along with whatever reduced salary comes back in the deal.”

Given that Boston’s top priority is trimming salary, it makes financial sense to move Holiday for a first-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft. Still, some view the asking price as underwhelming — if not disrespectful — for a player who’s helped two different franchises win championships in the past five years.

With the draft just weeks away, the Celtics and several other teams are expected to explore trade options that could land them higher picks. While such moves may impact Boston’s short-term championship hopes, they give the front office flexibility to plan for the future.

As for Holiday, he still carries meaningful value around the league despite nearing his 35th birthday. Last season, he averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Known for his elite perimeter defense and steady leadership, Holiday could be a key piece for any team looking to add toughness and experience to a playoff run.

The only question now: Who’s ready to take a chance on him?
