Will Power Swaps IndyCar for GT3 in Star-Studded Aussie Lineup at Indianapolis 8 Hour

Two-time IndyCar Series champion Will Power is set to trade his IndyCar for a GT3 machine at the coming race in Indianapolis. The Australian star will make his Intercontinental GT Challenge debut next weekend, October 16-18.

Power will pilot a 75 Express Mercedes-AMG. Also, he will join alongside countrymen Kenny Habul and Chaz Mostert at the Indianapolis 8 Hour presented by AWS.

Will Power’s Debut in Intercontinental GT Challenge

Will Power, who conquered the Indianapolis 500 in 2018, brings a wealth of experience to the Brickyard’s road course. He claimed victory there five times for Team Penske. Additionally, the Australian stood on the podium in the last two IndyCar events.

This move marks a belated GT3 debut for the champion, originally slated to race with the same team but operating under a different name at the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona before personal circumstances forced his withdrawal.

“Aussie Aussie Aussie! IndyCar star Will Power makes his GT3 debut next weekend when he joins fellow Kenny Habul and Chaz Mostert at #Indy8H.” announced from the official Twitter page of Intercontinental GT Challenge.

Meanwhile, Chaz Mostert arrives with formidable GT3 credentials. While he is a leading figure in Australia’s Supercars championship, sitting fifth ahead of the famed Bathurst 1000, his sports car resume is equally impressive. It includes a class victory at the demanding 2023 CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa with 75 Express’s forerunner, SunEnergy1.

A practice accident that same year prevented team owner Kenny Habul from joining Mostert on the Spa squad. Now, the trio finally has its chance to compete together. Their entry has been elevated from the Pro-Am to the premier Pro class, directly resulting from the high driver gradings assigned to both Power and Mostert.

But the team’s primary mission extends beyond a single strong finish. The overarching goal is to secure the IGTC’s Independent Cup title for Habul, who begins the event just six points behind the championship’s joint leaders, Antares Au and Ralf Bohn. Every position will be critical in this showdown.

Power will join Andretti Global for the next IndyCar season. It follows the growing trend of open-wheel stars appearing at the 8 Hour. Reigning and fellow series champion Alex Palou competed in a Pro class Mercedes-AMG for Lone Star Racing just last year.

Now, all eyes will be on this new all-Australian powerhouse. Fans are excited to see the debut in the coming days. As always, the fans also expect the best from the Australian.
