‘It Shocks Me’ – When Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller Delivered Blunt Assessment of NASCAR’s Women Drivers

Kelley Earnhardt Miller has been a significant force in NASCAR for years, helping build JR Motorsports into one of the most successful teams in the Xfinity Series.

But unlike her father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., and her brother, Dale Earnhardt Jr., she never made it as a professional driver. In a candid reflection, Kelley opened up about her challenges as a woman in the sport and how those struggles ultimately shaped her career.

Why Kelley Earnhardt Miller Left Her Racing Dreams Behind

From an early age, Miller had a passion for racing. She competed in smaller circuits and had the talent to go further, but opportunities for women in motorsports were scarce in the 1990s. Unlike her brother, who had full access to racing resources and backing, Kelley fought against an industry not ready to welcome female drivers.

“I often heard, ‘Kelley, the shop isn’t a place for girls,” she recalled in an interview with Kerri Mast in 2019. That mindset made it difficult for her to get the support needed to grow as a driver. Unlike male racers who could dedicate their time fully to the sport, Kelley had to juggle a day job and race only on weekends. Without sponsorship and a clear path forward, she was forced to rethink her future in NASCAR.

Another defining moment in her life was her parents’ divorce. While Earnhardt Jr. was still young, Miller took on a caretaker role in the family, stepping up to provide stability. This responsibility, combined with the lack of racing opportunities, led her to focus on the management side of the sport rather than competing behind the wheel.

Building a Legacy Off the Track with Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Though she never got to live out her dream as a professional driver, Miller has left an undeniable mark on NASCAR. As the co-owner of JR Motorsports, she has played a key role in the team’s success, helping it grow into a powerhouse in the Xfinity Series. Under her and Earnhardt Jr’s leadership, JRM fields four competitive cars and has won multiple championships.

Her influence goes beyond business. She has been instrumental in guiding Earnhardt Jr.’s ownership career, helping him make the right decisions off the track. Her sharp decision-making and leadership have made JR Motorsports one of the most respected teams in NASCAR today.

Looking at the sport now, Miller sees a world of difference from when she tried to make it as a driver. “The sport has changed, and it’s more open to women. It shocks me that there aren’t more women in the driver’s seat,” she admitted, recognizing that today’s female racers have opportunities she never did, yet there aren’t many women drivers racing.

Miller’s story is one of resilience. Though she had to step away from the driver’s seat, she never left the sport. Instead, she became one of the most influential figures in NASCAR, proving that sometimes the most significant impact happens off the track.
