George Russell Edges Max Verstappen in Singapore As McLaren Seals Dominant Constructors Championship

After Max Verstappen won two straight races in the last two F1 rounds, he ended the long-standing dominance of McLaren Racing. While claiming two consecutive victories, he also raised questions about his position in the title contention.

Now, considering Verstappen’s previous numbers at Singapore, there were serious doubts about how the Dutchman would fare at the Singapore GP. Along with this, many also wondered how the Singapore outing would turn out for the McLaren stars, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

However, when the results of the Singapore GP were out, British driver George Russell emerged at the front with the flag of Mercedes flying high and mighty.

How George Russell Emerged on Top at Singapore, Followed by Max Verstappen

The 27-year-old British driver found himself in an advantageous spot when he snatched the pole position over Verstappen for the Singapore GP, while the latter began second. Russell capitalized on his early advantage and left no loose ends in his run.

Despite constant pressure from Verstappen, the four-time champion, Russell maintained his lead and redeemed himself for his run at Singapore two years ago. After dominating the grid for 62 laps, the Mercedes driver cruised into victory lane for the second time this season and fifth time in his career.

Verstappen, on the other hand, grabbed the runner-up spot with a difference of 5.430 seconds behind the winner, Russell, whose time was 1:40:22.367.

After the contest, Russell described his emotional high and referred to his Singapore run two years ago. He said, “It feels amazing, especially after what happened a couple of years ago. That was a bit of a missed opportunity, but we more than made up for it today.”

The Mercedes driver thanked his team for the efforts and added, “I’m so grateful for the team; they did an amazing job this whole weekend. We don’t really know where this performance came from, but I’m really happy.”

Although the 27-year-old hoped to carry the same momentum for the rest of the season, he could not pinpoint the cause behind his exceptional performance. He revealed that a Mercedes team meeting was scheduled for the middle of the week to review his performance at the Singapore GP.

McLaren Racing Crowned Constructors’ World Champions

Norris and Piastri sat in the third and fourth positions, respectively. The two teammates made contact early in the race. A late braking blunder caused the Briton to make contact with Verstappen and Piastri.

Owing to the relatively minor damage, both McLaren drivers were able to quickly move past the setback and even achieve a significant milestone after the Singapore GP.

With a total win count of 12 and nine poles this season, McLaren Racing claimed the Constructors’ World Championship. What was noteworthy was that the team achieved the feat with six Grand Prix and three Sprints still due on the calendar.

With Russell bagging the win and McLaren being crowned Constructors’ World Champions, it did shake up the points table a fair bit. Piastri still sits atop the table with 336 points, followed by Norris, who has 314 points to his name. Verstappen remains third, with 273 points, and trails the title favorite Piastri by 63 points.
