NASCAR Star Stewart Friesen’s Family Break Down Recovery Roadmap After Major Multi-Hour Surgery

Just days after a strong P3 finish at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, veteran trucker Stewart Friesen was involved in a terrifying crash while participating in a dirt race. The multi-car wreck at Autodrome Drummond in Quebec, Canada, left the 42-year-old with a broken leg and fractured pelvis.

The on-track footage of the wreck sent shockwaves across the community. It showed the No. 52 driver’s car slamming into the track fence before erupting into a fireball, leaving fans stunned. Now, after undergoing multiple successful surgeries, Friesen’s wife, Jessica Friesen, has provided a new update on his condition, also detailing the next steps in his recovery.

While injuries in motorsports are a brutal reality, Friesen‘s Super DIRTcar Series disaster was brutal. The Canadian-American racer lost control of his No. 44 dirt modified car as he entered Turns 3 and 4, slamming into a tire barrier. The brunt force of the impact sent it several feet up in the air before it flipped over the outside retaining wall.

The massive crash turned the car into flames when it landed back on the track. But the horror didn’t end there. Friesen was then struck by multiple oncoming cars, rag-dolling him through a vicious inferno. The on-track footage of the wreck sent shockwaves across the community, showing the No. 52 driver’s car slamming into the track fence before erupting into a fireball, leaving fans stunned.

Following the incident, Friesen was admitted to a hospital in Trois-Rivieres, QC, before he was transferred to the U.S. to a Level One trauma care center at Canton Postdam Hospital in New York. There, he underwent extensive multi-hour surgeries to treat fractures to his pelvis and compound leg injuries.

Now, after undergoing multiple successful surgeries, Friesen’s wife, Jessica Friesen, has provided a new update on his condition, also detailing the next steps in his recovery. In a statement shared on X, Jessica updated the driver’s condition post-surgery. “Stewart had a successful multi-hour surgery last night to address both his pelvis and compound leg fracture, which went very well. After the surgery, he got some great rest overnight, and we feel like we are moving forward,” she wrote.

“We are scheduled to meet with the physical therapist soon and continue to make a plan for Stewart’s road to recovery,” addressing Friesen’s recovery journey. She also extended her heartfelt gratitude to all well-wishers and medical experts for their prompt responses. “We need to thank everyone at the hospital here in New York for their efforts yesterday, and everyone cheering us on and providing so much comfort to us. The racing community is truly a family, and we have felt that all week.”

Earlier this year, the Halmar Friesen Racing driver broke his year-long slump with a stunning victory at Michigan International Speedway, thus sealing a playoff berth. That breakthrough win put him back in championship contention after a difficult stretch.

However, considering the severity of his injuries and his long path to recovery, his championship hopes now hang in the balance.
