Mick Schumacher’s Latest Move Sparks Rumors of a Shocking Career Twist

26-year-old Mick Schumacher, son of legendary seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, has raised a million-dollar question following his recent U.S. visit: Is the WEC and former F1 driver heading to IndyCar? The young driver was recently spotted at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, reportedly testing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

With the one-day test complete and Schumacher soaking in the experience, the motorsport community wonders if we will soon see the Schumacher name on an NTT IndyCar car.

Could Mick Schumacher Make a Leap Into IndyCar?

The iconic “Schumacher” name returned to the IMS on October 13, as the young Schumacher took his first steps into the world of IndyCar. An Alpine World Endurance Championship driver, Mick completed a one-day Rahal Letterman Lanigan test in the No. 75 Honda at the iconic Indy road course.

For motorsport enthusiasts and racing aficionados, the moment carried added weight. Mick’s old man, the seven-time title-winning German legend, dominated the road course during the U.S. Grand Prix era, claiming five victories between 2000 and 2006. While the current layout differs from the one used in those F1 races, the symbolism of the young driver taking the wheel at a track so intertwined with his father’s legacy did not go unnoticed.

The young German driver’s move immediately sparked speculation about a potential career shift. Could IndyCar be the next chapter in his racing journey? Industry experts point out that the one-day test could be more than just an exploratory exercise.

With opportunities limited in Formula One and Mick still seeking a competitive seat, a move to NTT IndyCar could offer consistent track time, exposure to high-level competition, and a chance to build a new legacy beyond the F1 paddock.

“I still have to let everything sink in a bit, figure it out, and make a decision down the line,” the 26-year-old stated after he got a first-hand experience of the IndyCar machinery. “It’s hard to say how high the percentage is. Today was a lot of fun, but I need to analyze a bit more and see what that would look like,” he added.

While Schumacher admitted he enjoyed his time at the RLL Honda and expressed his passion for open-wheel cars (a love instilled by his father), he left the door open to speculation about his next move.

“I think in terms of what I’m doing in ’26, it’s very open. Obviously, the options are all there. IndyCar is one of them, so I really just wanted to know what it was like so I can make up my mind.”

However, the driver emphasized that whatever path he chooses, it won’t be a part-time or dual program; he intends to give it his full commitment.

During the test, the Vaud native familiarized himself with the nuances of IndyCar hardware, from the high-downforce aerodynamics to the unique tire characteristics, gaining valuable experience on a course renowned for demanding precision and adaptability. Sources from the team say the test went smoothly, giving the Alpine star a solid first impression of the American open-wheel series.

With social media abuzz and fans speculating whether this marks a full-time move to American racing or just a one-off test, one thing is clear: the Schumacher name is turning heads once again.
