A driver racing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series has one of the busiest schedules throughout the season. With action-packed races lined up every weekend, there is little time for anything else.
Now, add this to the mix – racing in not just another tournament but in a completely different car altogether. Even a single race can be an extremely difficult affair, especially if both races fall on the same weekend.
That is what ‘The Double’ is all about. While several drivers have attempted it, the latest on that list is Kyle Larson, who is going at it for the second consecutive year.
With Larson shining in the Cup Series this year, the HMS driver recently revealed his reason for attempting ‘The Double’ yet again.
Kyle Larson’s Motivation Behind Attempting ‘The Double’ is Much More Than Just Winning
Before revealing his motivations, Larson explained the logistics of traveling from Indianapolis to Charlotte. Having done it once already, the HMS driver was not overwhelmed by the hectic schedule.
Following this, Nick Wright asked Larson if he had won the Indy 500 earlier in the day, he would still prefer to go all the way to Charlotte to have his shot at another win.
Larson responded, saying: “I think it’d obviously be super cool if you got the chance to win the 500. Who else could say they’ve won both races?”
This led Kevin Wildes to ask Larson outright, “What made you want to do it?” Without any hesitation, Larson summed up his response in a single line, saying, “I love racing.”
The 2021 championship winner further added that he resonated more with the old-school racers, where drivers were not just restricted to one format and were versatile with their skill set.
“I’m kind of a throwback racer like the guys from back in the day who did race a lot of different types of cars.”
He even mentioned that in addition to his full-time NASCAR duties, he runs in other competitions, including dirt and sprint racing.
He further emphasized his passion for racing: “I race probably another 50 races on dirt tracks and sprint cars, and stuff. So, that’s not normal. It shows the love that I have for racing.”
However, that was not all. Larson even added that he likes challenging himself to grow as a racer and be more versatile. Besides, the HMS driver is keen on everything automotive and thoroughly enjoys learning about new cars.
He summed up his answer with, “So, to run two races in one day just kind of fits what I like to do. And hopefully, this year works out.”
In the end, Larson also mentioned the weather conditions that hampered his aspirations last year. After undergoing two rounds of qualification, Larson will start the Indy 500 in 19th position.
