After a funny mishap at the 2025 F1 Singapore Grand Prix, Martin Brundle has publicly apologized to singer Lewis Capaldi on social media. Brundle’s gridwalks have produced plenty of memorable celebrity moments, though his latest effort in Singapore backfired slightly.
F1 Icon Left Red-Faced After Hilarious Mix-Up with Lewis Capaldi on Singapore Grid
During his Singapore grid walk, Brundle made a humorous blunder by thinking Lewis Capaldi was his brother. Just before the Singapore national anthem, Brundle hurried over to someone he believed was the Grammy-nominated singer.
“Lewis, wonderful to see you…,” he started, but soon he realized he was talking to Lewis’s brother, Anthony, instead. “Oh, you’re his brother?” he laughed. “How are you both?”
Lewis, who showed up later, replied, “Very nice to meet you. Big fan.” They also told Brundle they were backing McLaren, just before he cut the interview short for the national anthem.
“I am sorry I mistook you but lovely to see you on the grid,” the Sky Sports presenter said.
To make the moment even more awkward, Capaldi reached out for a handshake, but Brundle failed to notice and walked away. Lewis couldn’t resist poking fun at the incident. He posted a clip of the hilarious interaction and captioned it, “Bitched by Brundle”.
Brundle saw the post and responded with an apology immediately. “Sincere apologies Lewis, I turned around to the camera with an urgent 3 second count going on in my ears to wind up for the national anthem,” he said.
“Had no idea you were trying to shake my hand. A cardinal sin on my part 🥲 which I hope to put right one day. Hope you enjoyed F1,” he continued.
Brundle, who raced in Formula 1 before moving into broadcasting, has earned a reputation for his occasionally clumsy but endearing gridwalk interviews.
Earlier this year in Saudi Arabia, Brundle was snubbed by Usher, and last year in Monaco, he clashed with Kylian Mbappe’s bodyguard, who told him, ‘I’m in charge here,’ during an attempted interview with the France national soccer team and Real Madrid star.
Brundle’s November 2023 Brazil gridwalk included a bizarre moment with Machine Gun Kelly, who played with his poppy, got him to mimic an air guitar, and concluded the interview with a thumbs-down to the camera.
During a 2023 visit to Las Vegas, Brundle encountered Shaquille O’Neal, who greeted him with a simple, “Lewis Hamilton baby.”
Brundle’s gridwalks have included funny run-ins with DJ Khaled and Pharrell Williams in Miami in 2022 and a chilly exchange with Cara Delevingne at Silverstone two years ago, during which the model refused to speak to him.
