Goodyear 400 Final Results: Denny Hamlin Pulls Off Daring Overtime Heist at Darlington

On a day when everything pointed to a dominant William Byron victory at the Goodyear 400, Denny Hamlin spectacularly flipped the script. Coming out of nowhere in the closing laps, the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran pulled off an epic victory heist, snatching his second consecutive win after Martinsville and reminding everyone why he’s a perennial NASCAR Cup Series threat.

After laying down an impressive pole-winning lap on Saturday, April 5, Byron looked untouchable for much of the Goodyear 400. The Hendrick Motorsports driver led a staggering 243 laps despite the untimely cautions. But once Tyler Reddick snatched the lead, the race morphed into an all-out dogfight to the checkered flag — and that’s where the drama truly began.

With fresher tires on his side, Byron, accompanied by Christopher Bell, launched a fierce charge toward Reddick in the closing laps. Byron was shaving off nearly six-tenths of a second per lap from the 23XI leader, setting up what seemed to be a late-race showdown. But then, out of nowhere, Ryan Blaney stormed into the picture, blitzing past Byron, Bell, and even Hamlin to snatch provisional second.

In a jaw-dropping surge, Blaney closed a four-second gap to Reddick and, with just six laps remaining, surged ahead to lead for the first time all afternoon. Then arrived the biggest twist of the race: Kyle Larson wrecked his car for the second time, bringing out the caution and forcing the race into overtime.

Blaney, along with Byron, Reddick, Bell, Hamlin, and several others, dove into the pits for a crucial four-tire stop late in the race. While many expected Blaney to maintain his lead exiting pit road, Hamlin had other plans. The JGR veteran pulled off a ruthless four-car leap on pit road, jumping from fourth to first.

Heading toward the green flag, Hamlin lined up in the front row alongside Byron, with Bell, Reddick, and Blaney right behind. As soon as the race resumed, fortune favored Hamlin as Byron, Bell, and Reddick got locked into a frantic three-wide battle, allowing the veteran to break free and build a one-second cushion up front.

Meanwhile, Blaney found himself stuck in a grueling scrap with Chris Buescher, fighting tooth and nail to hang onto fifth. In the end, what looked destined to be a Byron, Reddick, or even Blaney win turned into a masterclass from Hamlin, who walked away with the checkered flag yet again.
