The team has successfully secured the services of Matt Caller, Max Verstappen’s trusted number one mechanic at Red Bull Racing.
Caller joined Red Bull in 2015 as a number two mechanic and steadily worked his way up through the ranks. His promotion to number one mechanic in August 2022 placed him at the heart of Verstappen’s pit crew.
During Red Bull’s dominant run, Caller oversaw Verstappen’s complete car preparation. His meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of Verstappen’s working style made him one of the most trusted figures within the Red Bull garage.
Known for his calm under pressure and technical precision, Caller also played a key role in ensuring Verstappen’s car was consistently in peak condition across back-to-back championship campaigns and all through shattering multiple records.
Inside Audi’s Aggressive Hiring Spree Ahead of Its Formula 1 Debut
Audi’s latest acquisition also reunites Caller with Jonathan Wheatley, the team’s new principal. Wheatley previously worked alongside him at Red Bull as sporting director. In his new leadership role at Audi, Wheatley has emphasized surrounding the team with seasoned professionals who understand what it takes to compete at the front of the grid.
As per media reports, Caller’s expertise will be invaluable in establishing Audi’s technical and operational framework, particularly as the team integrates new power unit technology being developed at its Neuburg facility.
F1 insiders view the signing as a symbolic and psychological blow to Verstappen’s Red Bull team. Losing a core garage member known for his loyalty and expertise could present short-term challenges for Red Bull’s mechanical department. However, the world champions are expected to have a strong succession plan in place.
For now, Audi’s capture of Caller represents more than a simple staffing change; it’s a statement of intent. As the countdown to 2026 intensifies, Audi is preparing to contend from day one.
