New Era Sparks Debate Among Yankees Fans With Bold MLB Fourth of July Hat Reveal

Baseball, known as America’s pastime, would not be baseball without the ever-coveted baseball cap.

On Monday afternoon, New Era revealed the caps that the 30 Major League Baseball teams will wear in celebration of the Fourth of July. The hats feature light blue as a primary color and an American flag woven into the logos for each U.S. team. The Toronto Blue Jays are red and white to represent the Canadian flag.

The visors of the caps will alternate between red and royal blue, and will have a rope between the front panel and the bill. That is a major departure from the standard MLB design.

The New York Yankees hat, in particular, drew well over 100,000 impressions in its first two hours after release.

Fourth of July MLB Hats Cause a Stir

When it comes to the history of the Fourth of July caps across the MLB, New Era’s Stars and Stripes collection has really changed since the caps originally debuted in 2008, according to Joseph Zucker of Bleacher Report.

The very first collection featured all navy blue caps, despite whatever color scheme each franchise was rocking at the time.

Fans looking to purchase the 2025 Stars and Stripes hats will now have multiple options; in addition to the standard cap, they also have the opportunity to buy a low-profile, snapback, and flex.

That said, fans of the Yankees might not be making any hat purchases anytime soon. The organization is known for tradition and iconic branding. These hats go far away from that, and many fans are not happy.

“The [expletive] is that?,” one fan wrote of the Yankees’ hat on Twitter/X.

“WHO is buying this,” another fan asked.

On the other side, some fans like the change and modern style of the merchandise.

“Arguably one of the cleanest,” another fan said.

“I guess I’m buying another cap,” one fan wrote.

Throughout the years, the Yankees have experienced some interesting games on the anniversary of American independence. In 1939, on Independence Day, Lou Gehrig delivered his famed address to the crowd at Yankee Stadium.

“For the past two weeks, you have been reading about a bad break. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth,” Gehrig said.

Additionally, in 1983, Dave Righetti threw a no-hitter on the Fourth of July.

The Yankees boast an all-time record of 97-73 on July 4. This year, the ever-famous Subway Series falls on the July 4th weekend. The Yankees will be playing at Citi Field against the New York Mets starting on Friday, July 4. The series will take place all weekend with the first pitch of Game 1 slated for 3:10 p.m. EST.
