Yankees News: Jasson Dominguez Clears the Air on His Status After Injury Forced Early Exit From Dodgers Game

New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez entered the 2025 MLB season with sky-high expectations. He’s a potential five-tool player with power and speed upside. But so far, he’s been a bit underwhelming, posting a .246 batting average with six home runs and eight stolen bases across 191 plate appearances.

Lately, though, Dominguez had started to heat up, including a four-game hitting streak. That’s why it was such a tough break to see him exit early with an injury during Sunday Night Baseball against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fortunately, Dominguez shared a positive update on his status.

Jasson Dominguez Not Concerned With Injury

Dominguez said he’s not too worried about his thumb injury and is already feeling better just a day after it happened. Yankees manager Aaron Boone added that Dominguez will likely undergo tests, noting the outfielder had trouble gripping the bat.

The injury occurred while Dominguez was on the basepaths—he wore only one sliding mitt and jammed the exposed thumb.

It was definitely a questionable choice not to wear two mitts. Dominguez even admitted he might make that change going forward to avoid future injuries.

For now, the 22-year-old is considered day-to-day with a chance to return Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians. The Yankees have a scheduled day off Monday, which could help him recover in time.

If Dominguez doesn’t return against Cleveland, he’ll likely be back for the weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. It doesn’t appear to be a long-term issue, so the Yankees seem to have avoided the worst.

Dominguez’s Rest-of-Season Outlook

There’s still a lot to like about Dominguez’s rest-of-season outlook. He made clear strides in May, hitting .265 with four homers after batting just .228 with two home runs in March and April.

This is a 22-year-old in his first full MLB season. Slumps are part of the process, but Dominguez has all the tools to grow into a 25-25 player.

The underlying metrics back it up—he’s still making loud contact with a 9.1% barrel rate and a 112.1 MPH max exit velocity. A power binge could be coming soon. He just needs to stay healthy and be a little smarter on the basepaths.
