Yankees Manager Eases Fears With Positive Update on Austin Wells’ Health Scare

New York Yankees skipper Aaron Boone provided positive health updates on catcher Austin Wells’ condition. Per MLB insider Bryan Hoch, the skipper told the media that the backstop had undergone multiple tests on his left hand due to a circulatory issue, but the results had been encouraging.

Wells was left out of the series finale against the Athletics on Sunday and didn’t play any role in the series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The skipper reported that though the testing and scans didn’t reveal any injuries to Wells’ left hand, he would be given a rest until Wednesday.

Yankees Catcher Austin Wells Underwent Extensive Testing on Sunday

As reported by Hoch, Wells underwent more invasive testing involving an artery near his groin to rule out the formation of any blood clots or aneurysms. The Yankees skipper revealed that the test results didn’t raise significant concerns regarding the backstop’s health.

Hoch also revealed that after extensive testing, Wells reported damage to an artery on his index finger, which he attributed to repeated impacts from catching baseballs during games and practice sessions. Wells said, “I wasn’t too worried, but I just wanted to make sure. It just gets cold and changes colors. Now I know it’s nothing life-threatening.”

Wells has been Boone’s first-choice catcher this campaign. The position has been rotated between him and JC Escarra, with Ben Rice occasionally filling in since the versatile player can also play DH and first base. The Yankees are playing an essential intra-divisional series against the Toronto Blue Jays in Canada. They lost the series opener 5-4 on Monday night.

Austin Wells Has Been Fairly Consistent This Season

The backstop has a .214 batting average, 11 home runs, 45 RBIs, and a .699 OPS in 69 games this season. He has amassed 49 hits in 229 at-bats, including 13 doubles and one triple. Wells is projected to hit over 20 home runs and register over 85 RBIs in the current MLB campaign.

The Bronx Bombers will be hopeful that they can have their first-choice catcher back in the lineup soon, but he will surely not be featured for the current AL pennant holders in games 2 and 3 against the Blue Jays. The Bombers play out the series finale on Thursday before heading to Queens, NY, to kick off the three-game Subway Series against the New York Mets over the weekend.

The Yankees’ lead at the top in the AL East division has been reduced to 1.5 games over the past few weeks. They now hold a 48-36 overall record and would be aiming to turn back the tide in their favor in the remaining three games of the series against the Blue Jays.
