Luke Weaver Set For IL Stint, per MLB Insider Jeff Passan

According to MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Yankees right-hander is set to be transferred to the IL within the next few days. He reported that Weaver is likely to miss four to six weeks of action due to a hamstring strain.

“New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver is expected to be placed on the injured list after injuring his hamstring warming up Sunday night, sources tell ESPN. Weaver underwent an MRI and could miss four to six weeks, though the official timetable will be determined Tuesday,” Passan posted via X on Monday evening.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone had revealed the injury after their 7-3 win on the road over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon. Boone said that Weaver had picked up the knock while getting ready to make his appearance in the ninth inning of the game.

“He felt something when he had finished warming up, and then when he went to stretch, he felt something in the middle of his hammy,” Boone said while speaking to reporters after the victory. “So we had to make a switch on the fly there. We’re hoping it’s not too serious.”

Left-hander Tim Hill was tasked with getting the final three outs instead, with the game moving out of a save situation by then. The Yankees had the day off on Monday and have not officially confirmed the injury as yet.

Weaver had been used primarily as a starting pitcher for the majority of his decade-long MLB career. The former St. Louis Cardinals first-round pick struggled in the role and was DFA’d by the Kansas City Royals and the Cincinnati Reds in 2023.

New York claimed Weaver off waivers before re-signing him on a one-year deal for 2024. They converted him into a full-time relief pitcher, and he later became the closer of the team after Clay Holmes was taken out of the role a month ahead of the postseason.

Weaver returned to the role of the setup man for the 2025 campaign after the Yankees signed Williams to be the new closer. However, he was reinstated into the role at the end of April after the latter had a rough start to his tenure in New York.

At the moment, Weaver has a 1-1 record with eight saves from his 24 appearances this season. He has posted 25.1 innings thus far and holds an excellent 1.05 ERA, with 24 strikeouts and a 0.701 WHIP.
