The New York Yankees are hosts to the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series this weekend. It is the first meeting between the two powerhouses of Major League Baseball this year, with both teams heading into it with contrasting emotions.
After claiming the American League pennant last season, the Yankees seem to be an even more formidable team this year. On the other hand, the Red Sox have been underwhelming to say the least, having begun the season with grand expectations.

Anthony Volpe Suffers Right Elbow Contusion After HBP in Red Sox vs. Yankees
On Friday evening, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-9 in the opening encounter of the three-game series. The victory came at some cost, however, as Anthony Volpe made an early exit in the second inning due to a left elbow contusion after getting hit by a pitch.
Volpe was up at the plate for his second at-bat of the game with two outs and the bases loaded with his team leading by six runs. The Yankees shortstop had hit a two-run home run off Red Sox starter Walker Buehler in the first to put them into a commanding lead.
Buehler delivered an 88.8 mph changeup with the count at 2-2, which ran in a long way more than he wanted. The batter had no chance to avoid the ball as it landed squarely on his left elbow, allowing Paul Goldschmidt to score another run.
With Volpe in apparent agony from the blow, the Yankees had no choice but to remove him from the game. However, X-rays and CT scans taken late Friday have come clean, so he is not expected to miss much time.
“It’s painful and stiff. They took me in. Got it all checked out,” Volpe told reporters after the game. “The training staff is amazing. Tested me out and tested my range of motion. The X-rays came out negative, so that made me optimistic.”
“I expect to be there tomorrow,” he said. “We’ll see, obviously, how it responds tomorrow. Just knowing that nothing’s messed up, I’ll be doing everything I can to be out there tomorrow.”`

Durability has been a key facet of Volpe’s game, having missed only five games over his first two seasons in the MLB. The 24-year-old explained the pride he takes in being available for his team every single day.
“It’s everything to me. It’s how I was brought up in the game. You want to be available for the team. That’s the way to be the best teammate,” he said. “Everyone puts in a lot of work to be able to compete for your team. That’s what makes an everyday player.”
So far, Volpe has played 61 games this year. He has a .241/.321/.445 slash line with 27 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, seven stolen bases, 37 RBIs, and an OPS of .766.
