Yankees Coach Matt Blake Drops Huge Hint About Electrifying Prospect’s MLB Debut Amid Team’s Rotation Struggles

Before the season, The Athletic ranked Cam Schlittler as the eighth-best prospect in the New York Yankees‘ organization. Evaluators are taking notice of the tall righty, who was promoted in early June thanks to his impressive performance at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Schlittler recently pitched against Boston’s Triple-A squad, which includes Kristian Campbell, who was recently demoted by the big-league club. In six scoreless innings, Schlittler struck out nine batters, including Campbell three times, while his fastball reached 99 mph.

In his four Triple-A starts, Schlittler has a 1.69 ERA and five pitches with above-average grades in Stuff+. Yet, while Schlittler is undoubtedly garnering attention, whether he’ll have a chance to showcase his skills in the majors this season is still up in the air.

Yankees May Call on Schlittler in the Second Half of the Season

According to The Athletic, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake says fans will “probably not” see Schlittler in the major leagues in the “real near term.” However, the talented prospect is inching closer to making his major-league debut because he’s already performing at an above-average level at Triple-A.

As per the coach, there is a real chance that Schlittler will play for the Yankees in the second half of the season. “I think so,” Blake remarked. Blake also mentioned that a potential call-up is ultimately a front office decision, but he thinks Schlittler can continue to keep his name in the conversation by stacking up strong showings.

“I think he’s putting his name in the mix if we need a starter in the second half.”

The Yankees have one of the best pitching staffs in the majors. They boast a 3.47 ERA, the seventh best in MLB going into June 27 action. Additionally, their .219 opposing batting average ranks second in all of baseball, and they hold the same spot in strikeouts per nine innings (9.33).

After a somewhat difficult third collegiate season with Northeastern, Schlittler was chosen by the Yankees in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft.

In terms of the Yankees’ prospects, Schlittler lags behind left-handed pitchers Brock Selvidge and Henry Lalane, as well as fellow right-handed pitchers Ben Hess, Bryce Cunningham, Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, and Chase Hampton. He is the only top-10 prospect with the RailRiders at the moment, however, as the others are playing with lower affiliates.

The Yankees are currently 46-34 and in first place in the AL East. However, they are only 4-6 in their last 10 games and a mere half-game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays.

New York began a three-game series with the Athletics at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, with Mitch Spence and Will Warren taking the mound for the visitors and hosts, respectively.
