Will Warren Gets Brutally Honest About How Yankees Ace Gerrit Cole Wouldn’t Back Off After Rough Red Sox Outing

New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Will Warren is having an average season with the American League champions holders this season. Warren made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2024, finishing with an 0-3 record through five starts.

This season, Warren has a 4-4 record through 16 starts with a 4.66 ERA, 96 strikeouts, and a 1.33 WHIP.

With a stacked, experienced bullpen for the Yankees, Warren looks to take advantage of the knowledge and wisdom from other Yankees starting pitchers like Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and, most importantly, 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole.

Despite Cole being out this season, he keeps supporting teammates while sitting in the New York dugout.

Will Warren Reflects on How Gerrit Cole Keeps the Morale High Inside the Yankees Dugout

In an appearance on “Talkin’ Yanks,” Warren was asked about his chats with Cole during his starts. Warren voiced praise for the pitching ace’s conversational skill. He talked about one situation on June 6, when Warren was pitching against the Boston Red Sox.

Despite coming off with a win, Warren was visibly unhappy as he walked three batters in the sixth inning.

As a result, Warren was taken out of the game after 5 1/3 innings. “I will say the Boston game, the last inning didn’t go how I wanted it to,” Warren said. “Gerrit’s like, ‘You did well, Will. Will, you pitched well.’ And I’m just over there, like, gritting my teeth, like, I just walked the last three batters. I don’t want to hear it right now.

“And he’s like, ‘Will, you did well,'” Warren said. “And finally he walked over, and I was like, ‘Thank you, Gerrit.’ And he’s like, ‘I mean it. I know it didn’t end like you wanted it to, but you pitched well.’ And that’s just like, he’s just wanting to give you that knowledge, like, he wants to talk about it, and like he was waiting for me to finally, like, calm down and talk about it.

“There’s always so much knowledge in that Yankee clubhouse…,” Warren said. “Max Fried, Rodón, like, and those guys also open up and give knowledge, too. And that’s very helpful for someone in my position.”
