Sunday saw Chicago White Sox general manager Will Venable get tossed for the second time in his career.
The first-year manager was ejected on Father’s Day. Venable was ejected in the first inning during a heated game against the Texas Rangers. In the bottom of the first inning, Venable rushed out of the dugout to confront home plate umpire Marvin Hudson after a questionable call. The veteran umpire had missed a few calls in the inning, and Venable was thrown out for chirping at him.
Ironically, his first ejection was on Mother’s Day.
“I was unaware of that,” Venable said of the Father’s Day/Mother’s Day ejections. “But that is an interesting coincidence.”

According to Sports Illustrated, what ensued was one of the more heated confrontations between an umpire and a manager seen so far this season. John Schiffren and Steve Stone discussed the incident, and one of them offered a humorous prediction about what was said.
After Venable finally walked away, he said, “Well, happy Father’s Day to you. I think that was what was said. A few other words mixed in between. A couple.”

Venable is a former Major League Baseball outfielder best known for his time with the San Diego Padres. After retiring as a player, Venable joined the Chicago Cubs as a special assistant to the president of baseball operations, originally working under Theo Epstein, before becoming GM of the White Sox.
Perhaps tensions were high between the Rangers and Venable because he previously served as their associate manager.
Unfortunately, Venable’s start as GM has been a bit rocky. The White Sox currently sit last in the American League Central division, with 23 wins — 11 fewer than the Kansas City Royals, who are one spot above Chicago — and 49 losses. Additionally, the White Sox have the fewest road wins in the American League with seven.
Following the ejection, the Rangers defeated the White Sox 2-1. Rangers Ezequiel Duran and Marcus Semien each delivered RBIs in the win, which dealt the White Sox their fifth loss in a row.
Clearly, Venable has a lot to be frustrated about and a lot at stake. Next on the schedule for the White Sox: a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals starting Tuesday, followed by another three-game clash with the Toronto Blue Jays beginning Friday.
