New York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham went 3-for-6 with two home runs and two RBI in an 11-5 win on the road against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. With the win, the Yankees improved to 24-17 on the season, and the Mariners dropped to 22-18 on the season.
Grisham has performed well for the Yankees so far in the 2025 MLB season. Outside of Aaron Judge, there were many questions as to who else in New York’s lineup was going to step up. There is one reason why Grisham is performing better for the Yankees during the 2025 MLB season compared to his performances in years past.
New York Yankees Outfielder Trent Grisham Talks About Why He Is Having a Better 2025 Season
Grisham has stepped up for the Yankees in the 2025 season, amidst outfielder Juan Soto leaving for the New York Mets this offseason in a 15-year, $765 million deal. The 28-year-old outfielder has performed well for the Yankees in his first 34 games played through the 2025 MLB season.
The outfielder has a .288 batting average with 12 home runs and 22 RBI, along with zero stolen bases and one caught stolen base attempt. His on-base percentage is .373. Grisham spoke to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News about what he changed with his mental approach during the 2025 MLB season.
He said, “I was thinking like crap for a few years and playing like crap. It means thinking poorly. Like, ‘Woe is me’, feeling sorry for yourself, that kind of stuff.” His mentality has been a game-changer for him and the Yankees during the 2025 MLB season.
While Grisham didn’t reveal many specifics, he said that his mindset became a priority again two offseasons ago. He’s since enlisted the help of Chad Bohling, the Yankees’ senior director of organizational performance, and Dr. Bob Rotella, a sports psychologist. Rotella is known for his work with golfers and received a fair share of credit for Rory McIlroy’s recent Masters win.
Grisham was acquired in a trade with Soto that sent him from the San Diego Padres to the Yankees before the 2024 MLB season. He is 28 years old and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 MLB season. If he keeps this up, Grisham could very well be re-signed by New York. His new mental approach has helped the Yankees be a first-place team in the American League East so far during the 2025 MLB season.
He is currently playing a one-year $5 million contract. Grisham could be earning more money than that when he hits free agency this upcoming offseason. He has also been a big help to Judge in the lineup because other players have stepped up to help the current American League MVP frontrunner.
