Trea Turner Admits He Hilariously ‘Messed With’ Bryce Harper Before Epic Baby Gender Reveal

Bryce Harper stole the show with a one-of-a-kind gender reveal. As the Philadelphia Phillies took on the San Francisco Giants, Harper’s at-bat turned into a family moment, thanks to a baby-blue bat and a playful assist from teammate Trea Turner.

Trea Turner Had the Inside Scoop on Bryce Harper’s Baby News

Phillies first baseman Harper revealed the gender of his fourth child in a creative and fun way. During the game against the Giants on April 14, 2025, Harper stepped up to the plate wielding a custom baby-blue bat, indicating that he and his wife, Kayla, are expecting a boy.

Harper ordered two bats from Victus Sports — one blue and one pink — and asked Trea Turner to hand him the correct one based on the baby’s gender, which only Turner knew at that time.

“I was confused at first, but I think he wanted to share that moment with us. I think it was pretty cool. He’s a pretty creative guy. He let us know in our team meeting. He kind of wanted to share the moment with everybody. He was nice enough to ask me to do it.” Turner stated via Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

However, Turner decided to tease Harper before the big reveal. As Harper got ready for his first at-bat, Turner picked up the pink bat, knowing that Harper would suspect that he was having a girl. Eventually, Turner handed him the blue bat, revealing that the couple was expecting a boy.

“I messed with him a little bit in the dugout. I picked up the pink one and swung it around a little bit. He thought he was having a girl, so I had to mess with him a little bit. Sure enough, it was a boy. I ended up handing him the blue one, and he was pretty happy.” Turner said.

Harper and his wife, Kayla, met in college. In December 2016, the couple got married with a sacred ceremony at the San Diego California Temple, a temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I have an amazing family, I have an amazing wife, two beautiful kids that keep me very humbled and grounded. And you know I’m very fortunate to just be dad to them. … When I leave the field, it’s all about them,” Harper said on AM 570 LA Sports on May 16, 2022.

The couple had their first child, a son named Krew Aron Harper, on Aug. 22, 2019. Their second child, daughter Brooklyn Elizabeth Harper, was born on Nov. 12, 2020. Their third child, daughter Kamryn Ray Harper, was born on April 22, 2024. Now, the fourth child will make a family of six.

“He was just excited. I think he would have been excited either way, but now, he’s got two of each. Kind of a complete family already, but like I said, anytime you can add another person to the family, I think it’s special. I think he was super excited,” Tuner later added.

Harper went 1-for-5 in the game, which the Phillies lost 10-4. He struck out in his first at-bat using the blue bat and then switched back to his regular bat for the remainder of the game.
