‘They’re Screwed’ — Corbin Burnes Injury Sparks Predictions That Diamondbacks Could Headline MLB Trade Deadline

The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the season hoping to contend for the World Series. They have been contenders for the past two seasons and made a big move this offseason by signing Corbin Burnes to a massive contract.

While Burnes has been solid during his first season in Arizona, he is set to miss an extended period with an elbow injury. The loss of Burnes could derail the Diamondbacks’ season, and they could look to make several trades before the deadline.

MLB Insider Thinks Diamondbacks Need to ‘Sell at the Deadline’

With how the NL West has looked this season, even with a record of 28-31, the Diamondbacks are essentially out of the division race. They are eight games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place and trail both the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres. MLB insider Jim Bowden joined the Foul Territory show on Monday to discuss what the Diamondbacks could now do and how they need to make moves.

He spoke about the team’s situation and said, “If Corbin Burnes needs Tommy John or is out for the year and needs some kind of surgery, they’re screwed.”

Bowden also mentioned that the Diamondbacks could look to trade first baseman Josh Naylor and relief pitcher Shelby Miller. Additionally, they have two starting pitchers, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, who are set to be free agents at the end of the season. The analyst spoke about how it wouldn’t be a surprise to see these players traded over the next couple of months.

Diamondbacks Could Look for a Quick Retool

Bowden also mentioned that the Diamondbacks could use this trade deadline and offseason to “retool” their roster. They could add prospects or young players who can pay dividends over the next few seasons.

Arizona will continue to build around Corbin Carroll, who is one of the best players in baseball currently. He is hitting .254 with 16 home runs and 35 RBIs. He also leads the league in triples, with six. The 24-year-old has his name in the MVP conversation and will likely be a key player for the Diamondback for years to come.

The Diamondbacks’ front office has shown a willingness to spend money on free agents over the years. This past offseason, they signed Burnes and Eduardo Rodriguez. They also recently gave Ketel Marte a lucrative extension. Finding a few impact players in free agency could be what gets them back to the World Series in the near future. They last reached the Fall Classic in 2023.
