After Long Battle With Addiction, Rockies Owner Charlie Monfort Gets Honest About Team’s Sudden Downfall

Team owner Charlie Monfort has been with the Colorado Rockies since they were formed in 1992. They have a career winning percentage under .500 and are destined for their third straight 100-plus loss season.

With a 17-60 record before the All-Star break, it would take a miracle for this team not to reach that number again. Monfort is far from a perfect man, but he’s looking to get himself and the team back in the right direction.

Charlie and His Brother, Dick, Look To Turn This Team Around

Mickey Monus was one of the team’s original owners, but he served a 10-year sentence after being convicted of 109 counts of fraud and embezzlement. Monford was the chosen man to get things back on track, but he’s been arrested twice, in 1999 and 2016, for driving under the influence.

Monfort did not get into the specifics of his drinking problems or how long he’s been sober in an interview with the Denver Post.

“I don’t even know my sobriety day,” Monfort said. “I will tell you that I have had relapses off and on, but not for a long time.” Dick Monfort, Charlie’s brother who also is a Rockies’ team owner, confirmed that his brother is in a good place.

“I don’t think, in the past, he would never acknowledge to anybody what he told (The Post),” Dick said. “I think that is a big step. I was somewhat shocked to hear he did that.”

With the fans quickly losing hope, the Monfort brothers know that something needs to be done about this team. “We have to get back to letting the public know that we give a crap,” Charlie commented.

“I think sometimes fans think we don’t care,” Charlie said. “I read about it… The quality of the product is not what we expect, either. We have to give them at least some hope and faith that we do care and that we want to get this thing moving in the right direction.”

No team in baseball has a worse record than the Rockies, and it would be shocking if they didn’t come out of 2025 with the worst record in baseball history. After the Chicago White Sox set that mark a season ago, it’s a number that no team expected to hit anytime soon.

Even though they won four games in a row from June 15-18, it’s not enough to turn things around.

Not only did the Rockies win four games in a row, but they nearly swept the Washington Nationals in a four-game series. Game Four didn’t go their way as they lost 4-3 in 11 innings. Since that game, they’ve lost three in a row.

Regardless, this team had a relatively successful month of May. They swept the Miami Marlins to open the month and were able to grab series wins against the San Fransico Giants and Atlanta Braves.
