In an effort to turn their season around, the Boston Red Sox have finally called up top prospect Roman Anthony. The powerful outfielder wasted no time collecting his first MLB hit—and his family was there to enjoy the special moment.

Heading into his second big-league game, Anthony’s entire family traveled from Florida to support him. They watched proudly as he hit a double and drove in two runs in the Red Sox’s 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. MLB broadcast cameras captured the celebration, showing Anthony’s mom in tears.
Anthony’s parents, siblings, and grandparents sat right behind the Red Sox dugout. The rookie admitted he was surprised they all made the trip from Florida on short notice—but it meant everything to have them there for his first major league hit. Red Sox manager Alex Cora called it a “cool situation.”

Anthony’s call-up was one of the most anticipated moves of the season. The outfielder was ranked as the top prospect in baseball heading into 2025 and recently made headlines after crushing a nearly 500-foot grand slam for Triple-A Worcester.
He hit 10 home runs with a .913 OPS in Triple-A this season before being called up. Anthony rose to the top of prospect rankings last year after hitting 18 home runs and driving in 65 runs.
A second-round pick in 2022, Anthony is best known for his power, but scouts are also impressed with his plate discipline. His walk rate in the minors was over 15% at every level.
He’s shown the ability to hit for power to all fields and is also considered a strong baserunner with 20-steal potential. Defensively, he’s viewed as a solid fielder. His sliding catch on Tuesday night helped seal Boston’s win.

At 33-36, the Red Sox are fighting to stay in the playoff picture. They currently sit 3 1/2 games back in the American League wild card race. Third baseman Alex Bregman was off to a strong start before landing on the injured list with a quad strain that may sideline him until after the All-Star break.
To help a struggling offense outside of Rafael Devers, the team turned to a youth movement. Boston called up Anthony and shortstop Marcelo Mayer to join Kristian Campbell on the big-league roster.
The Red Sox are hoping their young stars can help keep the season alive until Bregman returns.
